Treatment of an overactive gag reflex: Two cases
Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, 1982Two cases are presented in which avoidance of dental work was caused by an overactive gag reflex rather than fear. Subjects were able to demonstrate increased control of gagging in the laboratory, and to complete a series of dental visits immediately after treatment and again at 6 or 12 month follow-up.

The Lancet, 1995The gag reflex is often used in the assessment of swallowing, yet its absence does not predict aspiration in acute stroke. Disordered pharyngeal sensation has been found to be a sensitive predictor. The occurrence of gag reflex and pharyngeal sensation in healthy people is unknown.
