NPC1 promotes the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma by mediating the accumulation of neutrophils into the tumor microenvironment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 4, Page 661-673, April 2025.
Compared to normal tissues, NPC1 expression is significantly elevated in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues. Our findings indicate that NPC1 plays a key role in regulating neutrophil recruitment within the tumor, which is a critical factor in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma and is closely linked to poor patient outcomes.

Purification and characterization of a thermophilic NAD+‐dependent lactate dehydrogenase from Moorella thermoacetica

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 5, Page 714-725, May 2025.
The thermophilic acetogenic model organism Moorella thermoacetica can utilize lactate as substrate. The formation of lactate by reduction of pyruvate is energetically favorable, but the reverse reaction, the oxidation of lactate to pyruvate with NAD+ as electron acceptor is challenging.

FAM136A depletion induces mitochondrial stress and reduces mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 5, Page 738-753, May 2025.
FAM136A depletion upregulated ROS production, reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ) and ATP production, and upregulated expression of PCK1, PCK2, HMGCS1, and HMGCS2. The expression of both TOMM22 and TOMM20 was also upregulated. FAM136A depletion reduced HCCS that produce holocytochrome c by combining heme to apocytochrome c, and reduced the ...

Identification of inhibitors of the Salmonella FraB deglycase, a drug target

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 5, Page 773-792, May 2025.
A high‐throughput screen was used to identify inhibitors of Salmonella FraB, a drug target. Characterization of top hits (identified after an additional counter screen) revealed that some triazolidines, thiadiazolidines, and triazolothiadiazoles are mixed‐type inhibitors of FraB.

The role of circular RNAs in regulating cytokine signaling in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cytokines present in the tumor microenvironment fuel cancer development. Aberrant expression of circRNAs contributes to cancer progression. Cytokines are involved in regulating circRNA biogenesis. Furthermore, aberrantly expressed circRNAs regulate the expression of ligands, receptors, and downstream effectors involved in cytokine signaling to promote ...
