GZK Violation - a Tempest in a (Magnetic) Teapot? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The apparent lack of suitable astrophysical sources for the observed highest energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) within $\approx 20$ Mpc is the "GZK Paradox". We constrain representative models of the extra-galactic magnetic field structure by Faraday Rotation ...

Multiscaling of Galactic Cosmic Ray Flux

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2003
Multiscaling analysis of differential flux dissipation rate of galactic cosmic rays (Carbon nuclei) is performed in the energy ranges: 56.3-73.4 Mev/nucleon and 183.1-198.7 MeV/nucleon, using the data collected by ACE/CRIS spacecraft instrument for 2000 year.

Radiation‐Induced Degradation in Polymeric Materials: Alterations in Physical–Chemical Properties and Their Effects on Electrical Performance of Insulation Systems

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the effects of radiation on polymeric materials used as insulation systems in electrical equipment such as cables for nuclear and particle accelerator applications. After a detailed description of the physics of radiation‐induced damage in the polymeric matrix, a comprehensive analysis of the physical–chemical and ...

Cosmic rays from Galactic pulsars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2004
We calculate energy spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays accelerated by the galactic population of pulsars during their radio and gamma-ray phase. Several models proposed for the distribution of the initial parameters of the galactic pulsar population are considered.

Multi messenger astronomy and CTA: TeV cosmic rays and electrons

open access: yes, 2012
Cosmic rays are a sample of solar, galactic and extragalactic matter. Their origin and properties are one of the most intriguing question in modern astrophysics. The most energetic events and active objects in the Universe: supernovae explosion, pulsars,

Epidemiology and Genetics of Rheumatic Diseases Suggest a Constant Rate of DNA Damage as Underlying Cause

open access: yesImmunology, EarlyView.
A constant rate of DNA damage that is not perfectly repaired will cause a constant rate of DNA mutations. The chance of mutation will increase if DNA is prone to damage, such as occurs in somatic hypermutation (SHM) hotspots and GC‐rich DNA. Thus, if one mutation‐prone DNA site drives disease, the age of onset of disease and degree of penetrance should

Galactic PeV Neutrinos

open access: yes, 2013
IceCube experiment has detected two neutrinos with energies beween 1-10 PeV. They might have originated from Galactic or extragalactic sources of cosmic rays.

Investigating the Cosmic-Ray Ionization Rate Near the Supernova Remnant IC 443 Through H3+ Observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Observational and theoretical evidence suggests that high-energy Galactic cosmic rays are primarily accelerated by supernova remnants. If also true for low-energy cosmic rays, the ionization rate near a supernova remnant should be higher than in the ...

Noble gases and nitrogen in material from asteroid Bennu

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract We report the elemental and isotopic abundances of all stable noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) in eight particles from asteroid Bennu returned by NASA's OSIRIS‐REx mission. We also report nitrogen abundances and isotopic ratios that were analyzed alongside neon and argon in four additional Bennu particles.
