Weighing the Galactic dark matter halo: a lower mass limit from the fastest halo star known

open access: yes, 2010
The mass of the Galactic dark matter halo is under vivid discussion. A recent study by Xue et al. (2008, ApJ, 684, 1143) revised the Galactic halo mass downward by a factor of ~2 relative to previous work, based on the line-of-sight velocity distribution

Mechanical Resonant Sensing of Spin Texture Dynamics in a 2D Antiferromagnet

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Detection of antiferromagnetic spin texture in a 2D magnetic crystal is achieved through nanomechanical resonators at radio frequencies. Sharp magnetic transitions that lead to abrupt changes in mechanical linear and nonlinear responses are assigned to antiferromagnetic domain motions.

The Magellanic Stream in Modified Newtonian Dynamics

open access: yes, 2006
The dynamics of the Magellanic Stream (MS) as a series of clouds extending from the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) to the south Galactic pole is affected by the distribution and the amount of matter in the Milky Way. We calculate the gravitational effect of the

All‐Heat Control of Magnetization Dynamics on Van der Waals Magnets

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Heat dissipation in nanomagnetic devices mediated by femtosecond laser excitation constitutes one of the pressing challenges toward energy‐efficient information communication technologies. Here it is shown that heat and magnetization play together to determine the ultrafast spin dynamics of van der Waals magnets across any substrates and magnet ...

What Rogue Hydrogen Clouds Tell Us about Galactic Magnetic Fields

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Observations of the Milky Way and external galaxies support the idea that large-scale magnetic fields are concentrated in galactic disks, with halo magnetic fields at least an order of magnitude weaker.

Chemical Inhomogeneities in the Milky Way Stellar Halo

open access: yes, 2008
We have compiled a sample of 699 stars from the recent literature with detailed chemical abundance information (spanning -4.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.3), and we compute their space velocities and Galactic orbital parameters.

Flexible Selenium Nanowires with Tuneable Electronic Bandgaps

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Nanotubes serve as effective test tubes for selenium nanowires, as their diameter precisely controls the width of the nanowires and the Se─Se bonding, resulting in a variety of different structures. An electron beam can be used to modify the nanotubes, allowing real‐time observation of the nanowire extrusion process. Additionally, optically transparent

Hydrostatics of the Galactic Halo

open access: yes, 1998
We investigated a hydrostatic equilibrium model of the Milky Way following Parker (1966), to constrain the large scale properties of the interstellar medium. In our approach we found an excellent agreement between our simple hydrostatic equilibrium model of the Milky Way and the recent all-sky survey data rangeing from the gamma-ray to the radio regime.

Rare‐Earth Ion Intercalation in Graphene via Thermal and Electrostatic Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Europium ions reversibly intercalate into the van der Waals gap of bilayer graphene when heat and electrostatic gate act together, switching the stacking order and electronic response on demand. Real‐time transport, simulations, and device tests expose a hidden 2D Eu sheet and its temperature‐tuned diffusion, showing a versatile electrochemical route ...

Coexisting Non‐Trivial Van der Waals Magnetic Orders Enable Field‐Free Spin‐Orbit Torque Magnetization Dynamics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders in van der Waals magnet above room temperature, inducing an intrinsic exchange bias and canted perpendicular magnetism is discovered. Such non‐trivial intrinsic magnetic order enables the realization of energy‐efficient and magnetic field‐free spin‐orbit torque memory devices.
