Geological processes shaping freshwater biodiversity: a synthesis of global evidence

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1568-1581, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Recent genomic data highlight the key roles of geological processes in shaping the diversification and biogeography of freshwater lineages. Specifically, physical processes such as tectonic uplift, erosion, glaciation, lake formation, and sea‐level fluctuation contribute extensively to the evolution of biotic diversity within and among ...

Swimming Under the Radar: Trout‐Free Kōaro Populations in Aotearoa Lakes and Tarns Are Rare, Understudied, and Disappearing

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 2, June 2026.
Over the last 150 years, most large, easily accessible lakes and tarns in Aotearoa (New Zealand) have experienced trout introductions or incursions, leaving few salmonid‐free reference lakes. Using database information and field surveys, we characterized lake, pond/tarn, and wetland systems found throughout Aotearoa that support populations of kōaro ...

Two Germans, a Swede, and a Giant kōkopu: The Background to the Earliest Documented Description of a New Zealand Freshwater Fish

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 2, June 2026.
Galaxiids are a family of scaleless and mostly small freshwater fish which are distributed across the temperate latitudes of the southern hemisphere. The largest member of this family is the giant kōkopu (Galaxias argenteus), which has the added distinction of being the first New Zealand freshwater fish of any kind to be scientifically described.

Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars. XV. Discovery of a Connection between the Monoceros Ring and the Triangulum-Andromeda Overdensity?

open access: yes, 2017
Thanks to modern sky surveys, over twenty stellar streams and overdensity structures have been discovered in the halo of the Milky Way. In this paper, we present an analysis of spectroscopic observations of individual stars from one such structure, "A13",

The stellar kinematics of co-rotating spiral arms in Gaia mock observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We have observed an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of a Milky Way like barred spiral galaxy. We present a simple method that samples N-body model particles into mock Gaia stellar observations and takes into account stellar populations,

Molecular Characterization of Eustrongylides sp. Infecting Channa punctata in Bangladesh

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 3, May 2026.
In this study, a total of 137 medium‐sized Channa punctata (17.5 ± 2.5 cm) were collected from different locations of Jamalpur and Netrokona district, Bangladesh and microscopically identified as belonging to the genus Eustrongylides based on morphological characteristics.

PN-Carbon Yields and the Chemical Evolution of the Galaxy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Two sets of observational carbon stellar yields for low-and-intermediate mass stars are computed from planetary nebulae abundances derived from C II $\lambda4267$ and C III $\lambda\lambda1906+1909$ lines, respectively.

Balancing Harvest and Habitat: A Framework for the Sustainable Management of Diadromous Galaxiids

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 1, March 2026.
Managing New Zealand's diadromous Galaxias species and the associated whitebait fishery presents a complex challenge due to species‐specific differences in life‐history strategies, habitat requirements, and population dynamics that underpin responses to anthropogenic and environmental pressures.
