Activity in colliding galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1993
A substantial body of evidence now exists that indicates that there is a connection between the observed activity in galaxies and the apparent involvement of these active galaxies in tidal interactions with other galaxies. To investigate this phenomenon, we are studying the morphologies and environments of various interacting galaxies showing evidence ...

The Fueling of Active Galaxies

The International Journal of Supercomputing Applications, 1991
Collisions of galaxies are often invoked to explain vio lent phenomena in the universe. The dynamics of in teracting galaxies is intrinsically three-dimensional and involves both gas and stellar dynamics. In general, a computational approach is needed to model galactic collisions. Galaxy encounters are studied using a hy brid N-body/hydrodynamics code,

Active Galaxies

Astronomische Nachrichten, 2008
AbstractIn this paper I will review, in an unavoidably incomplete and biased way, the main results obtained by XMM‐Newton on Active Galactic Nuclei. I will then highlight the major issues still open in which XMM‐Newton can still give important contributions, expecially if the observing programs will shift in the future towards more long exposures of ...

The Evolution of Active Galaxies in Clusters

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2003
The results of deep radio, sub-mm and X-ray observations of samples of high redshift (z∼1) clusters are presented. These reveal significant excesses of active galaxies associated with the clusters at all three wavelengths. The cluster radio source population shows evolution consistent with the (1+z)3 evolution typical of many AGN classes.

The Effects of Galaxy — Galaxy Interactions on Nuclear Activity

1986
The notion that galaxy — galaxy interactions do affect the properties of galaxy nuclei is not new. The earliest indications come from surveys of the radio continuum emission from spiral galaxies. Sulentic (1976) and Stocke (1978) demonstrated that galaxies in close pairs show an excess of radio emission.

Activity in Liner and Starburst Galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1993
We find, using narrow-band imaging, a direct spatial coincidence between the location of bright [Fe II] 1.64µm line emission and compact steep spectrum radio sources in the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. For a large sample of active galaxies (starburst, LINER and Seyferts) we also find a strong correlation between the integrated ...
