Stellar populations in bulges of spiral galaxies [PDF]

We present line strengths in the bulges and inner discs of 38 galaxies in the local Universe, including several galaxies whose bulges were previously identified as being disc like in their colours or kinematics, to see if their spectral properties reveal evidence for secular evolution. Bulges on the Fundamental Plane of early-type galaxies [PDF]

In an ongoing effort to study the formation and evolution of galactic bulges we have investigated the position of 19 bulges of type S0-Sbc on the fundamental plane (FP). We find that bulges, both in B and K band, lie close to but slightly below the FP defined by ellipticals and S0s, i.e. are slightly brighter.

AS in the case of other spiral galaxies, such as M31 (refs 1, 2), the rotation curve of gas in our Galaxy indicates that its nuclear bulge is triaxial3. Despite several studies4,5 of the distribution of specific objects in the galactic bulge, no observational evidence of asymmetry has emerged.

A Near-Infrared Photometric Plane for Elliptical Galaxies and Bulges of Spiral Galaxies

We report the existence of a single plane in the space of global photometric parameters describing elliptical galaxies and the bulges of early-type spiral galaxies. The three parameters that define the plane are obtained by fitting the Sersic form to the brightness distribution obtained from near-infrared K-band images.
