Galaxy Evolution from Deep Galaxy Counts [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1995
We present deep galaxy number counts and colours of K – band selected galaxy surveys. We argue that primeval galaxies are present within the survey data, but have remained unidentified. There are few objects with the colours of an L∗ elliptical galaxy at a redshift of z ≈ 1, in contradiction to standard luminosity evolution models.

THE MOSFIRE DEEP EVOLUTION FIELD (MOSDEF) SURVEY: REST-FRAME OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPY FOR ∼1500 H-SELECTED GALAXIES AT 1.37 ≤ z ≤ 3.8 ?> [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this paper we present the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. The MOSDEF survey aims to obtain moderate-resolution (R = 3000–3650) rest-frame optical spectra (∼3700–7000 Å) for ∼1500 galaxies at 1.37 ≤ z ≤ 3.80 ?> in three well-studied ...

Triazine‐Trione Thermosets with High Processability for Scaffold Applications in Bone Tissue Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Novel photo‐clickable triazine‐trione thermosets can be shaped and cured under mild conditions, including room and physiological temperatures. These materials are biocompatible and support osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells on their surface.

Evolution of the dust emission of massive galaxies up to z=4 and constraints on their dominant mode of star formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We aim to measure the average dust and molecular gas content of massive star-forming galaxies (>3 × 1010M⊙) up to z = 4 in the COSMOS field to determine if the intense star formation observed at high redshift is induced by major mergers or is caused by ...

End‐to‐End Sensing Systems for Breast Cancer: From Wearables for Early Detection to Lab‐Based Diagnosis Chips

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review explores advances in wearable and lab‐on‐chip technologies for breast cancer detection. Covering tactile, thermal, ultrasound, microwave, electrical impedance tomography, electrochemical, microelectromechanical, and optical systems, it highlights innovations in flexible electronics, nanomaterials, and machine learning.

Gas Circulation and Galaxy Evolution [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2010
Galaxies must form and evolve via the acquisition of gas from the intergalactic environment, however the way this gas accretion takes place is still poorly understood. Star-forming galaxies are surrounded by multiphase halos that appear to be mostly produced by internal processes, e.g., galactic fountains.

Energy input from quasars regulates the growth and activity of black holes and their host galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2005
In the early Universe, while galaxies were still forming, black holes as massive as a billion solar masses powered quasars. Supermassive black holes are found at the centres of most galaxies today, where their masses are related to the velocity ...

Versatile Gasochromic Hydrogen Detection via Supraparticle‐Based Applied Composite Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Silica‐platinum‐resazurin supraparticles are embedded into PMMA to form suprabeads and thin films. The thereby obtained indicators change color from purple to pink to colorless on hydrogen exposure. The indicator systems are tested under various environmental conditions, and their performance is related to their microscopically visualized structure ...

The MassiveBlack-II simulation: The evolution of haloes and galaxies to z ~ 0 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We investigate the properties and clustering of halos, galaxies and blackholes to z = 0 in the high resolution hydrodynamical simulation MassiveBlack-II (MBII). MBII evolves a ΛCDM cosmology in a cubical comoving volume Vbox = (100Mpc/h)³.

First results from the TNG50 simulation: the evolution of stellar and gaseous discs across cosmic time [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
We present a new cosmological, magnetohydrodynamical simulation for galaxy formation: TNG50, the third and final instalment of the IllustrisTNG project. TNG50 evolves 2 × 21603 dark matter particles and gas cells in a volume 50 comoving Mpc across.
