Triggering Star Formation by Galaxy-Galaxy Interactions [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2004
We analyzed the effects of having a close companion on the star formation activity of galaxies in the 8K galaxy pair catalog selected from the 2dFGRS. We found that, statistically, galaxies with rp < 25h−1 kpc and ΔV < 100km s−1 have enhanced star formation with respect to isolated galaxies with the same luminosity and redshift distribution.

Hierarchical galaxy formation [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2002
We describe the GALFORM semi-analytic model for calculating the formation and evolution of galaxies in hierarchical models. It improves upon, and extends, the Cole et al 1994 model. The model employs a new Monte-Carlo algorithm to follow the merging evolution of dark matter halos with arbitrary mass resolution. It incorporates realistic descriptions of

Tidally triggered galaxy formation. II - Galaxy number counts [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1993
A model is presented for the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function in which the distribution of the galaxy masses, star formation time scales, and star formation turn-on redshifts is derived from the initial power spectrum of density fluctuations. The mass function of galaxy halos is very steep at low masses.

DLAs AND GALAXY FORMATION [PDF]

open access: yesModern Physics Letters A, 2007
Damped Lyman-α systems (DLAs) are useful probes of star formation and galaxy formation at high-redshift (hereafter high-z). We study the physical properties of DLAs and their relationship to Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations based on the concordance Λ cold dark matter model.

Galaxy formation and evolution: low-surface-brightness galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1998
We investigate in detail the hypothesis that low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) differ from ordinary galaxies simply because they form in halos with large spin parameters. We compute star formation rates using the Schmidt law, assuming the same gas infall dependence on surface density as used in models of the Milky Way.

Collision‐induced Galaxy Formation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1998
We present a semi-analytical model in which galaxy collisions and strong tidal interactions, both in the field and during the collapse phase of groups and clusters help determine galaxy morphology. From a semi-analytical analysis based on simulation results of tidal collisions (Aguilar & White 1985), we propose simple rules for energy exchanges ...
