Constraining dark energy using real and mock galaxy surveys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this thesis, we study how dark energy may be constrained by measurements of large-scale clustering in future galaxy surveys, and through the imprint of a time-varying large-scale potential on the CMB (the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect).

Simulating molecular cloud regulated star formation in Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This thesis is primarily concerned with understanding the process of galaxy formation via the simulation of the interstellar medium, star formation and supernova feedback.

Evidence for a population of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies from interferometric imaging [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We have used the Submillimeter Array to image a flux-limited sample of seven submillimeter galaxies, selected by the AzTEC camera on the JCMTat 1.1 mm, in the COSMOS field at 890 µm with ~2″ resolution. All of the sources— two radio-bright and five radio-

In Pursuit of High Redshift Galaxies

open access: yes, 2016
Some contributions in Chap. 1 have highlighted the impact of the discovery in the 1960s of a handful of radio galaxies and Quasars in the redshift range z ∼ 0.2–0.4. About 40 years later, at the end of the twentieth Century, the systematic exploration of

Clustering of galaxies at high redshifts [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1998
Recent observations show a large concentration of galaxies at high redshift. At first sight, strong clustering of galaxies at high redshifts seems to be in contradiction with the models of structure formation. In this paper we show that such structures are a manifestation of the strong clustering of rare peaks in the density field.

Testing the Standard Cosmological Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This thesis exploits the wealth of information contained in the existing cosmological surveys, and demonstrates how the use of tools such as two-point statistics permit the extraction of such information.

Cosmic Magnification of High-Redshift Submillimeter Galaxies

open access: yesGalaxies
Weak lensing magnification probes the correlation between galaxies and the underlying matter field in a similar fashion to galaxy–galaxy lensing shear. Although it has long been sidelined in favor of the latter on the grounds of poorer performance in terms of statistical significance, the provision of a large sample of high-redshift submillimeter ...

Searches for high redshift radio galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We have started a search for High Redshift Radio Galaxies (HzRGs) in an area covering 7 sr by selecting a sample of Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) sources with a low flux density cut-off S{sub 1400} > 10 mJy and a steep spectral index {alpha} 3 5 Our search
