Why Schonland Failed in His Search for Runaway Electrons From Thunderstorms

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 10, 28 May 2025.
Abstract B.F.J. Schonland, advised and encouraged by C.T.R. Wilson, made two unsuccessful searches for runaway electrons from thunderstorms in the 1930s. These findings stand in marked contrast with research results over the last decade and ironically set this field of research back many decades.

In Situ Analysis of Jupiter's Broadband Kilometric Auroral Radio Emissions With Juno

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 9, 16 May 2025.
Abstract Among the zoo of Jovian auroral radio emissions, the broadband kilometric (bKOM) component has been the least studied. Taking advantage of Juno in situ measurements within the auroral regions, we surveyed the Juno/Waves radio observations over the 60 first orbits to identify 7 bKOM source candidates.

Solar Cycle Detected in Natural Tritium of Ice Layers Before the Nuclear Era

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 9, 16 May 2025.
Abstract The 11‐year cycle of the solar activity affects the production rate of cosmogenic isotopes. For tritium in precipitation, it has been just recently proven that this link exists. Here we show, for the first time, a tritium ice core time series which extends back to 1923, covering a time period that avoids the presence of artificial tritium from
