The Low Metallicity ISM of Dwarf Galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2002
The properties of the low metallicity environments of dwarf galaxies are studied through dust observations in conjunction with the FIR fine-structure cooling lines. There is a striking enhancement of the I[CII]/I(CO) in dwarf galaxies that is explained by the decreased attenuation of the UV light in molecular clouds.

The Early ISM and Galaxy Formation

1990
I review current ideas about galaxy formation, concentrating on when and how it occurred, and what it might look like. As theoretical ideas have been refined, it has become clear that galaxy formation may be both less spectacular and more recent than originally predicted.

The Interplay Between ISM, Star Formation and Galaxy Evolution

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2004
I present a model for the formation and evolution of a massive disk galaxy, within a growing dark halo whose mass evolves according to cosmological simulations of structure formation. The galactic evolution is simulated with a new 3D chemo-dynamical code, including dark matter, stars and a multi-phase ISM. We follow the evolution from redshift z = 4.85

Environmental Effects on ISM Content of Cluster galaxies

EAS Publications Series, 2012
Galaxies in dense environments of clusters and groups are objects to ram pressure and hydrodynamical effects of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) that can significantly affect their interstellar content (ISM). We perform numerical simulations of the ram pressure stripping using tree/SPH code GADGET with an adapted method for calculating ISM-ICM ...

The ISM in nearby galaxies: NGC1365

2010
We propose a sensitive spectral survey of the nuclear region of the nearby Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC1365. These observations are to confirm a similar program carried out in 2007, which suffers from severe bandpass issues. The previous observations have resulted in 76+ tentative detections, including 27 emission lines that have not been observed in ...

The ISM in the Starburst Galaxy NGC 1569

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005
The recent starburst in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 1569 has had a deep impact on the interstellar medium of the whole galaxy. In this paper, we discuss the consequences of this event for the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen and demonstrate how strong star formation influences the properties of the surrounding molecular gas ...

The Warm Component of the ISM of Elliptical Galaxies

1992
The characteristics of the optical emission-line gaseous component of elliptical galaxies are reviewed. We focus on three questions — the origin and fate of the gas and its excitation. The relative merits of accretion or infall events and cooling-flows are compared with regard to these questions. The cooling-flow model has the largest number of hurdles

Feedback in galaxy formation with two-phase ISM

2003
I present a model for galaxy formation based on the physics of two-phase ISM in pressure equilibrium. In this model gas cools or infalls from an external halo, fragmenting into small clouds. These coagulate to form giant molecular complexes, which collapse and form stars. Supernovae drive superbubbles into the hot phase.
