A Scenario for the Ionization of the Diffuse ISM in Galaxies and the IGM in Clusters
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2002The diffuse Hα emitted from the discs of spirals is of order 50% of their total Hα emission (Ferguson et al., 1996; Zurita et al., 2000), requiring strong energy input. Energy of stellar winds or SNe falls short by two orders of magnitude, white dwarf Lyc by one order. Sciama’s (e.g.

The ISM in the Starburst Galaxy NGC 1569
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005The recent starburst in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 1569 has had a deep impact on the interstellar medium of the whole galaxy. In this paper, we discuss the consequences of this event for the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen and demonstrate how strong star formation influences the properties of the surrounding molecular gas ...

The Low Metallicity ISM of Dwarf Galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2002The properties of the low metallicity environments of dwarf galaxies are studied through dust observations in conjunction with the FIR fine-structure cooling lines. There is a striking enhancement of the I[CII]/I(CO) in dwarf galaxies that is explained by the decreased attenuation of the UV light in molecular clouds.

The ISM in nearby galaxies: NGC1365
2010We propose a sensitive spectral survey of the nuclear region of the nearby Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC1365. These observations are to confirm a similar program carried out in 2007, which suffers from severe bandpass issues. The previous observations have resulted in 76+ tentative detections, including 27 emission lines that have not been observed in ...

The Interplay Between ISM, Star Formation and Galaxy Evolution
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2004I present a model for the formation and evolution of a massive disk galaxy, within a growing dark halo whose mass evolves according to cosmological simulations of structure formation. The galactic evolution is simulated with a new 3D chemo-dynamical code, including dark matter, stars and a multi-phase ISM. We follow the evolution from redshift z = 4.85
