The ISM in nearby galaxies

open access: yesNew Astronomy Reviews, 2004
Abstract The SKA will revolutionise the study of the principles underlying star formation (SF), resolving interstellar cloud complexes which are the birthplaces of stars and answering such questions as which are the sufficient and necessary conditions for SF to commence. Also, massive SF is intimately related to stellar death. The SKA will be able to

A survey of the ISM in early-type galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Series, 1999
We present results of a CCD optical imaging survey of the dust content in 22 early-type luminous galaxies, selected from the RC3 Catalog. A large fraction (75%) of the observed galaxies show significant amounts of dust. The morphology and size of the dust distribution of the observed galaxies follows very closely that of the ionized gas.

Form flows function: Learner‐centered game Re‐design in a STEM classroom

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Re‐designing games facilitates interest‐driven learning and immerses learners in systems thinking. However, there are limited studies exploring how the form and function of tabletop games influence learners' design decisions and learning experiences. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed‐methods study in a STEM classroom in western Canada.

Study of ISM tracers in galaxies

open access: yes, 2006
We collected data for two samples of normal and interacting galaxies for a total of 2953 galaxies having fluxes in one or more of the following wavebands: FIR, 21 cm line, CO(1-0) lines and soft X-ray. The large set of data obtained allowed us to revisit some of the already known relations between the different tracers of the interstellar medium (ISM),

Evolution of the ISM in starbursting dwarf galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
We present a 2D-hydrodynamical simulation of the gas flow generated by a starburst in a dwarf galaxy. We focus in particular on the ejection efficiency both of the ISM and of the metals produced during the burst. It turns out that while the galaxy is able to retain most of the ISM, a significant fraction of the metals is lost, supporting the ...

Cis–Trans Rotational Isomerism of Formic Acid, Sulfur, and Selenium Analogues and Their Dimers: Chemical Kinetics Under Interstellar Conditions

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Kinetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present chemical kinetic rate constants for the cis to trans isomerisation or rotamerization of monomeric seleno‐, thio‐, and formic acids and that of three of their dimeric species, based on variational transition state theory and multidimensional tunneling calculations in the gas‐phase, from 10 K to 300 K. These provide, firstly, reliable

Simulations and modelling of the ISM in galaxies

open access: yes, 2012
The latest observations of molecular gas and the atomic hydrogen content of local and high-redshift galaxies, coupled with how these correlate with star formation activity, have revolutionized our ideas about how to model star formation in a galactic context.

Human Sustainability Leadership and Employee Wellbeing (Flourishing) in Organizations

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This qualitative case study research examines how designing for human sustainability leadership (HSL) affects employee wellbeing (flourishing) (HWBF) in organizations. It is undertaken at a university in the United Kingdom including academics and administrators.

The Great Cosmic Silence: What Does the Fermi Paradox Tell About the Future of Humanity?

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines how institutional time horizons shape the long‐term survival prospects of human technological civilisation. While research on global catastrophic and existential risks has expanded, the temporal structures of political‐economic institutions remain underexamined.

Hot ISM in young elliptical galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractUsing Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of young, post-merger elliptical galaxies, we present X-ray characteristics of age-related observational results, by comparing with typical old elliptical galaxies in terms of X-ray properties of their low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and hot interstellar matter (ISM).
