The observations of the optical polarization of starlight [1,2] showed large-scale alignment of the vectors which was interpreted to be due to galactic magnetic fields which align interstellar grains [3]. The data on star polarization accumulated over many years (e.g. [4,5,6]) giving in the end a large sample of objects at known distances.

Magnetic fields play an important role in galaxies. Interstellar magnetic fields are strongest in massive spiral arms of galaxies (20–30 μG) and in nuclear starburst regions (up to 100 μG). Processes related to star formation tangle the field lines, so that little polarization is observed in star‐forming regions.

The polarization of the 100 μm emission from the 3 pc dust ring at the center of the Galaxy has been measured at five points. The magnetic field inferred from the measurements lies in the plane of the ring but does not appear to be toroidal. We estimate a field B ≈ 10−2 gauss.
