Galaxies with Binary Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2013
AbstractIt is known that among active galaxies (AG) with strong emission lines (UV-galaxies, Sy1 and Sy2, Markarian and Kazarian galaxies, radio-galaxies, QSOs host galaxies and so on) there is a large percentage of objects with double and multiple (or complex) nuclei.

Active galactic nuclei and galaxy interactions [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2007
We perform a statistical analysis of active galactic nucleus (AGN) host characteristics and nuclear activity for AGNs in pairs and without companions. Our study concerns a sample of AGNs derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 data by Kauffmann et al. and pair galaxies obtained from the same data set by Alonso et al.

Merging Galaxies with Active Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
We are investigating a sample of nearby interacting and merging galaxies showing starburst properties and/or nonthermal nuclear activity (e.g. Mrk 231, Mrk 739, Mrk 1027, NGC 2992, Arp 92).

Properties of Galaxies with Peculiar Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1967
In a former note (Sersic and Pastoriza 1965) we published the results of a survey of bright southern galaxies which were inspected for peculiarities in their nuclei. Although the sample was small ( 35 galaxies) it suggested a relationship between the existence of a bar and the presence of abnormal features in their nuclei.

Interacting Nuclei in Distant Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1990
The interaction of galaxies not only occurs in galactic scales, but also may be linked to the binary cores in active galactic galaxies. The presence of a binary in the center of galaxies was suggested by Begelman, Blandford and Rees (1980). Gaskell (1983) suggests that supermassive binaries may account for the observed structure of emission line ...

Galaxies and Their Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesHighlights of Astronomy, 1974
Our Extraordinary General Assembly is devoted to the memory of one of the greatest men of science to the genial Polish astronomer - Nicolaus Copernicus. The main service of Copernicus which has made his name immortal was in finding the correct interpretation of the planetary motions we observe.

Active Galactic Nuclei among Polar-Ring Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy Letters, 2020
Based on SDSS data, we consider the fraction of active galactic nuclei among polar-ring galaxies. We have found evidence for an excess of Seyfert galaxies and LINERs among polar-ring galaxies compared to ordinary objects. The observed nuclear activity of polar-ring galaxies may be associated with the accretion of gas from the region of the polar ...

Quasi-periodic eruptions from galaxy nuclei

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2022
ABSTRACT I consider quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) from galaxy nuclei. All the known cases fit naturally into a picture of accretion from white dwarfs (WDs) in highly eccentric orbits about the central black holes which decay through gravitational wave emission.

Spatially Resolved Spectra of 3C Galaxy Nuclei [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 1998
We present and discuss visible-wavelength long-slit spectra of four low redshift 3C galaxies obtained with the STIS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. The slit was aligned with near-nuclear jet-like structure seen in HST images of the galaxies, to give unprecedented spatial resolution of the galaxy inner regions.
