Active nuclei of galaxies

Astronomische Nachrichten, 1976
AbstractThe parameters of fifteen active nuclei are determined from spectroscopic and photometric observations. The values of bolometric luminosity, gas volume and mass, kinetic energy, characteristic dimension and kinematic time‐scale are given. The fluxes of radiative and mechanical energy of the gas envelope are compared. A steady‐state model of the

Nuclei of normal galaxies

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1986
The author reviews recent research on the environment in which active nuclei reside, namely the dense stellar populations found in the centers of elliptical galaxies and spiral bulges. He discusses new developments concerning the structure and dynamics of nuclei, recent results on the age and chemical composition of nuclear populations, the possibility

The anti-nuclei production of our galaxy

Nuclear Physics B - Proceedings Supplements, 1999
Abstract The discovery of a single anti-helium nucleus in the cosmic ray flux would definitely point toward the existence of stars and even of entire galaxies made of anti-matter. The presence of anti-nuclei in cosmic rays has actually profound implications on the fundamental question of the baryon asymmetry of the universe.

Active Galaxies And Their Nuclei

2004
Abstract At a conference held in Manchester in 1984, Bernard Pagel aptly paraphrased George Orwell by commenting that”all galaxies are active, but some are more active than others.” Activity in galaxies manifests itself in a variety of ways.

MILLER-UREY SYNTHESIS IN THE NUCLEI OF GALAXIES

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1998
The most promising venues for the synthesis of prebiotic molecules by Miller-Urey type processes may be found near the centres of galaxies. Explosions of supermassive stars would produce the basic chemical elements necessary to make molecules in high-density mass flows that are then acted upon by ionizing radiation, thus simulating the conditions ...

Recurrent Seyfert activity in spiral galaxy nuclei

Nature, 1981
Hills1 has pointed out that in some conditions black holes in galactic nuclei would rapidly grow by disruption and accretion of stars thus producing Seyfert luminosities (>1043 erg s−1). In this hypothesis only those galactic nuclei with a high central stellar density are susceptible to Seyfert pathology, and they evolve through only one Seyfert phase.

Megamasers in Nuclei of Galaxies

1986
Powerful maser emission has been detected in a small number of galaxies. Most of these have Seyfert or starburst nuclei and exhibit other signs of galactic activity. Broad OH emission has been seen in the prototype megamaser IC 4553 (= Arp 220) (Baan, Wood, and Haschick 1982; Baan and Haschick 1984; Norris et al. 1985), NGC 3690 and Mrk 231 (Baan 1985).

Studies of galaxies with peculiar nuclei

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1975
Photometric, morphological and spectral grounds suggest that the peculiar nuclei regions of NGC 1097, 1672, 2997, 5236, and 7552 are composed basically of a normal nucleus surrounded by several large but otherwise normal (Te∼8000 K,Ne∼1000/cm3) H II regions.
