Are There Jets in Spiral Galaxies?
1983The absence in spiral galaxies of large-scale collimated jets of radio emission is still little understood. Collimated emission in elliptical galaxies in some cases exceeds by far the optical extent of the galaxy (e.g. in NGC6251). Westerbork observations of NGC4258 (van der Kruit, Oort and Mathewson, 1972) and NGC3079 (de Bruyn, 1977) have provided ...

The global properties of galaxies such as their observed luminosities may be severely affected by internal obscuration of the stars by dust. In this thesis I examine the amount and extent of this obscuration using the following approaches: For a sample of eight galaxies for which I have obtained multi-waveband optical and near-infrared observations I ...

Comparison of the Galaxy with External Spiral Galaxies
1987In this chapter some areas of comparative exploration in our and external galaxies are reviewed and discussed. Photometric parameters for the Galaxy are derived. The radial scalelength is 5.0 ± 0.5 kpc, and this makes our Galaxy (and M31) unusually large unless Ho = 65 ± 10 km s−1 Mpc−1. Surface photometry of external edge-on galaxies, in particular of
