Spirals in Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesAnnual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2021
Spirals in galaxies have long been thought to be caused by gravitational instability in the stellar component of the disk, but discerning the precise mechanism had proved elusive.

Retracted: Can the chemical industry solve the climate change? On the role of human energy production, renewable energies, and the potential of chemistry as a solution provider

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView., 2023
Let us consider an alternative perspective on climate change: The sum of solar radiation and heat generated by human activity result in a net energy input of 1.96 times that of the Sun on the Earth's surface. The expanding global population is expected to exacerbate this issue. Potential solutions are proposed, including replacement and heat recycling.

SUPERLUMINOUS SPIRAL GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACT We report the discovery of spiral galaxies that are as optically luminous as elliptical brightest cluster galaxies, with r-band monochromatic luminosity L r  = 8–14L* (4.3–7.5 × 1044 erg s−1).

Galaxy Zoo: dust in spiral galaxies★ [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2010
We investigate the effect of dust on spiral galaxies by measuring the inclination-dependence of optical colours for 24,276 well-resolved SDSS galaxies visually classified in Galaxy Zoo. We find clear trends of reddening with inclination which imply a total extinction from face-on to edge-on of 0.7, 0.6, 0.5 and 0.4 magnitudes for the ugri passbands. We

Chaotic spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesCelestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, 2011
We study the role of asymptotic curves in supporting the spiral structure of a N-body model simulating a barred spiral galaxy. Chaotic orbits with initial conditions on the unstable asymptotic curves of the main unstable periodic orbits follow the shape of the periodic orbits for an initial interval of time and then they are diffused outwards ...

Rotation and Mass in the Milky Way and Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
[PASJ Review Paper] Rotation curves are the basic tool for deriving the distribution of mass in spiral galaxies. In this review, we describe various methods to measure rotation curves in the Milky Way and spiral galaxies.

The Circum-Galactic Medium of Massive Spirals. II. Probing the Nature of Hot Gaseous Halo around the Most Massive Isolated Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We present the analysis of the XMM-Newton data of the Circum-Galactic Medium of MASsive Spirals (CGM-MASS) sample of six extremely massive spiral galaxies in the local universe.

Measuring the Spin of Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2006
We compute the angular momentum, the spin parameter and the related distribution function for Dark Matter halos hosting a spiral galaxy. We base on scaling laws, inferred from observations, that link the properties of the galaxy to those of the host halo; we further assume that the Dark Matter has the same total specific angular momentum of the baryons.
