The HI Halo of Spiral Galaxies

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 2004
The results of observational studies on the vertical HI density distribution and kinematics of the disks of spiral galaxies are reported and discussed. Attention is drawn to the presence of HI emission, unknown before and here referred to as the `beard', which has anomalous structure and kinematics, different from the known cold HI disk. This component

The optical polarization of spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2000
Scattering of starlight by dust, molecules and electrons in spiral galaxies will produce a modification of the direct intensity and a polarization in the observed light. We treat the case where the distribution of scatterers can be considered to be optically thin, and derive semi-analytic expressions for the resolved intensity and polarized intensity ...

Assembling Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1996
Nearby spiral galaxies offer vital clues to some of the most fundamental questions about galaxy formation and evolution: What is the star formation history of the universe, past and future? When did disks form, during the final stages of a single primeval collapse, or as a continuous or episodic process?

ULTRALIGHT SCALARS AND SPIRAL GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesModern Physics Letters A, 2001
We study some possible astrophysical implications of a very weakly coupled ultralight dilaton-type scalar field. Such a field may develop an (approximately stable) network of domain walls. The domain wall thickness is assumed to be comparable with the thickness of the luminous part of the spiral galaxies. The walls provide trapping for galactic matter.

Exploring the evolution of spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2002
We have constructed a family of simple models for spiral galaxy evolution to allow us to investigate observational trends in star formation history with galaxy parameters. The models are used to generate broad band colours from which ages and metallicities are derived in the same way as the data.

ON THE FRACTION OF BARRED SPIRAL GALAXIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
We investigate the stellar masses of strongly barred spiral galaxies. Our analysis is based on a sample of ~14000 visually-classified nearby galaxies given in Nair & Abraham 2010(a). The fraction of barred spiral galaxies is found to be a strong function of stellar mass and star formation history, with a minimum near the characteristic mass at ...

Scaling Relations of Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2007
We construct a large data set of global structural parameters for 1300 field and cluster spiral galaxies and explore the joint distribution of luminosity L, optical rotation velocity V, and disk size R at I- and 2MASS K-bands. The I- and K-band velocity-luminosity (VL) relations have log-slopes of 0.29 and 0.27, respectively with sigma_ln(VL)~0.13, and
