Magnetic fields in spiral galaxies [PDF]
Radio synchrotron emission is a powerful tool to study the strength and structure of magnetic fields in galaxies. Unpolarized synchrotron emission traces isotropic turbulent fields which are strongest in spiral arms and bars (20-30 μG) and in central starburst regions (50-100 μG).

Polarimetric Observations of Spiral Galaxies
The extragalactic systems NCC 3031, NCC 4594, NGC 5194, and NGC 5457 have been observed polarimetrically. Linear polarization between 0.1 and 1.0 percent was detected in the spiral arms of all four galaxies. This thesis deals with surface photometry of face-on spiral galaxies in a statistical way, using both single passband as well as color information of a large sample of galaxies. In this chapter I first discuss galaxy formation and evolution models and the role that photometry plays in testing these models.
