Wolf–Rayet stars in starburst galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesNew Astronomy Reviews, 2000
Wolf-Rayet stars have been detected in a large number of galaxies experiencing intense bursts of star formation. All stars initially more massive than a certain, metallicity-dependent, value are believed to experience the Wolf-Rayet phase at the end of their evolution, just before collapsing in supernova explosion.

Near-infrared spectroscopy of post-starburst galaxies: a limited impact of TP-AGB stars on galaxy spectral energy distributions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We present VLT-ISAAC near infrared (NIR) spectro-photometric observations of 16 post-starburst galaxies aimed at constraining the debated influence of TP-AGB stars on the spectral energy distribution (SED) of galaxies with stellar ages between 0.5 and 2 ...

Triggered Starbursts in Galaxy Mergers [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
A unified formation mechanism of nuclear starbursts is presented; all the nuclear starbursts are triggered by binary supermassive black holes made in the final phase of galaxy mergers. Minor mergers cause both nuclear starbursts and hot-spot nuclei while major mergers cause (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies. We discuss the case of Arp 220 in detail.

Dust extinction of the stellar continua in starburst galaxies: The Ultraviolet and optical extinction law

open access: yes, 1994
We analyze the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) UV and the optical spectra of 39 starburst and blue compact galaxies in order to study the average properties of dust extinction in extended regions of galaxies.

Galaxies and Photometric Signature of Starburst [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1996
In a series of papers (see Rakos & Schombert 1995, ApJ 439, 47), we have carried out CCD photometry of galaxies in rich clusters at various redshifts. We use a modified Strömgren system, modified in the sense that the filter set is “redshifted” to the cluster of galaxies in consideration (i.e., λobs = λ(1 + z), therefore no k-correction).

Massive starburst galaxies in a z = 2.16 proto-cluster unveiled by panoramic Hα mapping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We present a panoramic narrow-band study of Hα emitters in the field of the z = 2.16 proto-cluster around PKS 1138−262 using MOIRCS on the Subaru Telescope.

Nearby starburst galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1989
New multiaperture 1.65 and 2.2 micron photometry has been obtained for the central region of 132 spirals exhibiting 2 orders of magnitude range in central 10-micron luminosity. This multiaperture photometry along with optical spectroscopy indicated that the high central 10-micron luminosity (about 1 billion solar luminosities) is powered by massive ...
