Are brightest halo galaxies central galaxies? [PDF]
It is generally assumed that the central galaxy in a dark matter halo, that is, the galaxy with the lowest specific potential energy, is also the brightest halo galaxy (BHG), and that it resides at rest at the centre of the dark matter potential well. This central galaxy paradigm (CGP) is an essential assumption made in various fields of astronomical ...

Surface Brightness Plateau in S4G Galaxies
Using 3.6-μm data from 2112 galaxies, we show that, contrary to widely held expectations of a continuous steep decline, radial surface brightness profiles of galaxies tend to flatten and form extended plateaus beyond 27–28 magAB/arcsec2.

This study identifies a key signaling pathway involving the environmental sensor AhR and antimicrobial peptides, such as BD‐1, in the regulation of intestinal homeostasis. It highlights the role of BD‐1 in regulating gut microbiota and the intestinal immune response.

Evolutionary population synthesis: models, analysis of the ingredients and application to high‐z galaxies [PDF]
Evolutionary population synthesis models for a wide range of metallicities, ages, star formation histories, initial mass functions and horizontal branch morphologies, including blue morphologies at high metallicity, are computed.

Current star formation in early-type galaxies and the K+A phenomenon
We present the results of an effort to identify and study a sample of the likely progenitors of elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) K+A galaxies. To achieve this, we have searched a sample ~11,000 nearby (m(r)

AbstractMany protein classification systems capture homologous relationships by grouping domains into families and superfamilies on the basis of sequence similarity. Superfamilies with similar 3D structures are further grouped into folds. In the absence of discernable sequence similarity, these structural similarities were long thought to have ...

In terms of the variable nature of normal active galaxy nuclei (AGN) and luminous quasars, a so-called flux variation gradient (FVG) method has been widely utilized to estimate the underlying non-variable host galaxy fluxes.

High Redshift Quasars, Emission Lines and ‘Cloudy’
I describe some of the outstanding “big picture” questions in quasar research and how the development of the plasma simulation code Cloudy is being guided to answer them.

Predictions and Outcomes for the Dynamics of Rotating Galaxies
A review is given of a priori predictions made for the dynamics of rotating galaxies. One theory—MOND—has had many predictions corroborated by subsequent observations.
