On the Origin of [OII] Emission in Red Sequence and Post-starburst Galaxies

open access: yes, 2005
We investigate the emission-line properties of galaxies with red rest-frame colors using spectra from SDSS DR4. Emission lines are detected in more than half of the red galaxies.

Saving Bambi from the mower? Using a drone with thermal camera to evaluate a low‐tech scaring technique to reduce roe deer fawn mortality during grass harvest

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Roe deer is a species that hides their neonates as an anti‐predator strategy. This may prove efficient against mammalian predators, such as the red fox; however, it might be an ecological trap as large numbers of fawns are killed by tractors with harvesters each year during grass harvest.

The V_c-sigma_c relation in high and low surface brightness galaxies

open access: yes, 2004
We investigate the relation between the asymptotic circular velocity, V_c, and the central stellar velocity dispersion, sigma_c, in galaxies. We consider a new sample of high surface brightness spiral galaxies (HSB), low surface brightness spiral ...

Radiation‐Induced Degradation in Polymeric Materials: Alterations in Physical–Chemical Properties and Their Effects on Electrical Performance of Insulation Systems

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the effects of radiation on polymeric materials used as insulation systems in electrical equipment such as cables for nuclear and particle accelerator applications. After a detailed description of the physics of radiation‐induced damage in the polymeric matrix, a comprehensive analysis of the physical–chemical and ...

MEASURING GALAXY MASSES USING GALAXY-GALAXY GRAVITATIONAL LENSING

open access: yes, 1995
We report a significant detection of weak, tangential distortion of the images of cosmologically distant, faint galaxies due to gravitational lensing by foreground galaxies. A mean image polarisation of $=0.011\pm 0.006$ is measured for 3202 pairs of source galaxies with magnitudes $23< r \le 24$ and lens galaxies with magnitudes $20\le r\le 23 ...

‘A Sort of Armed Argument’: Ireland's Civil War of Words

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract This article sets out to contribute to the study of the languages of European civil wars through outlining and analysing the deployment of language as a weapon by the opposing sides of the Irish independence movement that split over the terms of the Anglo‐Irish Treaty of December 1921.

The Seyfert Population in the Local Universe

open access: yes, 2003
The magnitude-limited catalog of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2), is used to characterize the properties of galaxies hosting Active Galactic Nuclei.
