The Mean Ratio of Mass to the Three-Halves Power of Luminosity for Elliptical and Lenticular Galaxies

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1971
The available data on masses of ellipticals and lenticulars are summarized with emphasis on the uncertainties in the ratio R of mass to 10-O.6M, where M is the absolute magnitude. With correction for galactic absorption the result is R= 0. ;2147 'o (and, as a by-product, a mean mass-luminosity ratio of 38-+ based on the magnitude scale in the de ...

Dust-lanes in elliptical and lenticular galaxies

2019
A restricted sample of 'elliptical-like' galaxies with dust-lanes, but containing no significant luminous disc, has been defined. It is demonstrated that these galaxies cannot be distinguished from a comparable sample of morphologically normal ellipticals on the basis of UBV colours or luminosity.
