Cosmological evolution and hierarchical galaxy formation [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1999
We provide a new multi-waveband compilation of the data describing the cosmological evolution of quasars, and discuss a model that attributes the evolution to variation in the rate of merging between dark halos in a hierarchical universe. We present a new Press-Schechter calculation of the expected merger rate and show that this can reproduce the ...

AGN EVOLUTION FROM A GALAXY EVOLUTION VIEWPOINT [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2015
We explore the connections between the evolving galaxy and AGN populations. We present a simple phenomenological model that links the evolving galaxy mass function and the evolving quasar luminosity function, which makes specific and testable predictions for the distribution of host galaxy masses for AGN of different luminosities. We show that the $ ^{

Galaxy formation and evolution: low-surface-brightness galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1998
We investigate in detail the hypothesis that low surface brightness galaxies (LSB) differ from ordinary galaxies simply because they form in halos with large spin parameters. We compute star formation rates using the Schmidt law, assuming the same gas infall dependence on surface density as used in models of the Milky Way.

Galaxy Evolution from Deep Galaxy Counts [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1995
We present deep galaxy number counts and colours of K – band selected galaxy surveys. We argue that primeval galaxies are present within the survey data, but have remained unidentified. There are few objects with the colours of an L∗ elliptical galaxy at a redshift of z ≈ 1, in contradiction to standard luminosity evolution models.

Triazine‐Trione Thermosets with High Processability for Scaffold Applications in Bone Tissue Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Novel photo‐clickable triazine‐trione thermosets can be shaped and cured under mild conditions, including room and physiological temperatures. These materials are biocompatible and support osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells on their surface.

Facile Bottom‐Up Assembly of Photonic Micropatterns via Surface‐Guided Colloidal Crystallization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
High‐resolution photonic micropatterns with vivid structural colors are fabricated through bottom‐up assembly, guided by surface‐dependent regioselective heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth of colloidal particles. Full‐spectrum color tunability is achieved by controlling particle size and interparticle attraction, while in situ color mixing is ...

Gas Circulation and Galaxy Evolution [PDF]

open access: yesAIP Conference Proceedings, 2010
Galaxies must form and evolve via the acquisition of gas from the intergalactic environment, however the way this gas accretion takes place is still poorly understood. Star-forming galaxies are surrounded by multiphase halos that appear to be mostly produced by internal processes, e.g., galactic fountains.

Versatile Gasochromic Hydrogen Detection via Supraparticle‐Based Applied Composite Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Silica‐platinum‐resazurin supraparticles are embedded into PMMA to form suprabeads and thin films. The thereby obtained indicators change color from purple to pink to colorless on hydrogen exposure. The indicator systems are tested under various environmental conditions, and their performance is related to their microscopically visualized structure ...

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.
