Parametric Design of Continuum Robots Using Interlocking Ball Joints

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Herein, a parametric design methodology is introduced for producing a wide variety of modular ball joint‐based continuum robots. It is demonstrate by designing a magnetically actuated continuum robot for cardiac ablations. The methodology is released as an open‐source computer‐assisted design extension that automatically designs continuum robots based ...

Galaxy-CMB and galaxy-galaxy lensing on large scales: sensitivity to primordial non-Gaussianity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A convincing detection of primordial non-Gaussianity in the local form of the bispectrum, whose amplitude is given by the fNL parameter, offers a powerful test of inflation.

Are brightest halo galaxies central galaxies? [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2010
It is generally assumed that the central galaxy in a dark matter halo, that is, the galaxy with the lowest specific potential energy, is also the brightest halo galaxy (BHG), and that it resides at rest at the centre of the dark matter potential well. This central galaxy paradigm (CGP) is an essential assumption made in various fields of astronomical ...

Modelling feedback from stars and black holes in galaxy mergers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We describe techniques for incorporating feedback from star formation and black hole (BH) accretion into simulations of isolated and merging galaxies. At present, the details of these processes cannot be resolved in simulations on galactic scales.

Multitarget Recognition of Flower Images Based on Lightweight Deep Neural Network and Transfer Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This article proposes a lightweight YOLOv4‐based detection model using MobileNetV3 or CSPDarknet53_tiny, achieving 30+ FPS and higher mAP. It also presents a ShuffleNet‐based classification model with transfer learning and GAN‐augmented images, improving generalization and accuracy.

Communication rules regarding support seeking in patients with a physical illness, according to people with a Surinamese or a Dutch cultural background

open access: yesJournal of Migration and Health
Objective: People with different cultural backgrounds can evaluate the appropriateness of direct and indirect support seeking differently. In this study we explored how direct and indirect communication rules for verbal support seeking by patients with ...

A galaxy of folds [PDF]

open access: yesProtein Science, 2009
AbstractMany protein classification systems capture homologous relationships by grouping domains into families and superfamilies on the basis of sequence similarity. Superfamilies with similar 3D structures are further grouped into folds. In the absence of discernable sequence similarity, these structural similarities were long thought to have ...

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: power-spectrum analysis of the final data set and cosmological implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We present a power-spectrum analysis of the final 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), employing a direct Fourier method. The sample used comprises 221 414 galaxies with measured redshifts.

The Stochastic‐Dissipative Störmer Problem‐Trajectories and Radiation Patterns

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, EarlyView.
We consider charged particle motion and radiation in a dipole magnetic field, in the presence of friction and of stochastic forces. The numerical solutions of the Langevin equation reveal how these forces modify the complex dynamics of particles, and they offer some new insights into the nonlinear processes relevant to planetary radiation belts ...
