Quantifying the Impact of Relativistic Precession on Tidal Disruption Event Light Curves

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The tidal field of a black hole can turn a star into a gas stream whose orbit can precess, especially if the a black hole is rapidly spinning. In this work, we investigate the impact of precession on the light curves of tidal disruption events (TDE).

Communication rules regarding support seeking in patients with a physical illness, according to people with a Surinamese or a Dutch cultural background

open access: yesJournal of Migration and Health
Objective: People with different cultural backgrounds can evaluate the appropriateness of direct and indirect support seeking differently. In this study we explored how direct and indirect communication rules for verbal support seeking by patients with ...

Star Formation Histories with Gaia: The Galaxy and Beyond

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2003
ESA’s Gaia mission will provide accurate astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data for millions of stars in the Galaxy and beyond. We discuss the prospects of using this vast amount of astrophysical information for understanding star formation ...

Relativistic Effect in Galaxy Clustering

open access: yes, 2014
The general relativistic description of galaxy clustering provides a complete and unified treatment of all the effects in galaxy clustering such as the redshift-space distortion, gravitational lensing, Sachs-Wolfe effects, and their relativistic effects.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: power-spectrum analysis of the final data set and cosmological implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We present a power-spectrum analysis of the final 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), employing a direct Fourier method. The sample used comprises 221 414 galaxies with measured redshifts.

Understanding Degradation Mechanisms in Water‐In‐Salt Electrolyte. Part 2: Impact of the Electrochemical Parameters on the Cycling Behavior of LiFePO4 versus TiS2

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
Cycling water‐in‐salt batteries involves complex degradation processes that require multiprobe analysis. Using online electrochemical mass spectrometry (OEMS), postmortem X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) (including hard‐XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the degradation mechanisms are examined in composite electrodes (TiS2 and LiFePO4)

RELATION OF DAILY PERIODS OF VLF RADIATION WITH X-RAY SOURCES

open access: yesVestnik KRAUNC: Fiziko-Matematičeskie Nauki, 2016
Spectral analysis of electromagnetic noise radiation in the VLF range at three fixed frequencies for the period from 1997 to 2015 have been carried out. Periodograms with diurnal components associated with the periods of the Earth rotation relatively the

Rotation-invariant convolutional neural networks for galaxy morphology prediction [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv.org, 2015
Measuring the morphological parameters of galaxies is a key requirement for studying their formation and evolution. Surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have resulted in the availability of very large collections of images, which have permitted ...

Form flows function: Learner‐centered game Re‐design in a STEM classroom

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Re‐designing games facilitates interest‐driven learning and immerses learners in systems thinking. However, there are limited studies exploring how the form and function of tabletop games influence learners' design decisions and learning experiences. To address this gap, we conducted a mixed‐methods study in a STEM classroom in western Canada.

UV-Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1983
At the present time the previously used term “Peculiar galaxy” is gradually being replaced by the term “active” galaxy. This is quite natural, because the overwhelming majority of “peculiar” galaxies turned out to be “active” at the same time. The opposite is not correct: there are a lot of examples where a galaxy looking normal is physically active.
