Multiwavelength Study of Massive Galaxies at z~2. I. Star Formation and Galaxy Growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Examining a sample of massive galaxies at 1.4 < z < 2.5 with KVega < 22 from GOODS, we compare photometry from Spitzer at mid- and far-IR to submillimeter, radio, and rest-frame UV wavelengths, to test the agreement between different tracers of star ...

Introducing the Illustris Project: the evolution of galaxy populations across cosmic time [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We present an overview of galaxy evolution across cosmic time in the Illustris Simulation. Illustris is an N-body/hydrodynamical simulation that evolves 2*1820^3 resolution elements in a (106.5Mpc)^3 box from cosmological initial conditions down to z=0 ...

The cosmic baryon cycle and galaxy mass assembly in the FIRE simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We use cosmological simulations from the FIRE (Feedback In Realistic Environments) project to study the baryon cycle and galaxy mass assembly for central galaxies in the halo mass range Mhalo ∼ 10^(10)–10^(13) M_⊙.

A review of multiscale numerical modeling of rock mechanics and rock engineering

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Multiscale numerical methods of rock mechanics and rock engineering are reviewed, and the review results show that more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model in addition to numerical techniques themselves. Abstract Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological ...

Detecting Wandering Intermediate-Mass Black Holes with AXIS in the Milky Way and Local Massive Galaxies

open access: yesUniverse
This white paper explores the detectability of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) wandering in the Milky Way (MW) and massive local galaxies, with a particular emphasis on the role of AXIS.

Galaxy protocluster candidates around z ~ 2.4 radio galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We study the environments of 6 radio galaxies at 2.2 < z < 2.6 using wide-field near-infrared images. We use colour cuts to identify galaxies in this redshift range, and find that three of the radio galaxies are surrounded by significant surface overdensities of such galaxies. The excess galaxies that comprise these overdensities are strongly clustered,

High‐Performance Stretchable Gallium Battery for Wearable Electronics, Through Synthesis of Foam Electrodes

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Foam electrode synthesis, characterization, and application as a cathode in batteries. The demand for sustainable and stretchable thin‐film printed batteries for bioelectronics, wearables, and e‐textiles is rapidly increasing. Recently, we developed a fully 3D‐printed soft‐matter thin‐film Ga‐Ag2O battery with 3R characteristics: resilient to ...

Variations of the Ratio of Total-To-selective Extinction in the Galaxy

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2003
The results of the study of variations of total-to-selective extinction RV near the Galactic plane (-12° ≤ b ≤+12°) are presented. It is shown that variations of RV range from 1.9 to 3.4 and it is not possible to determine its typical value for the ...

Quality of life in heart failure. The heart of the matter. A scientific statement of the Heart Failure Association and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Heart Failure, EarlyView.
For most patients with chronic, progressive illnesses, maintaining good quality of life (QoL), with preserved functional capacity, is just as crucial as prolonging survival. Patients with heart failure (HF) experience much worse QoL and effort intolerance than both the general population and people with other chronic conditions, since they present a ...

Meniscus Root Tear: Extended Classification and Arthroscopic Repair Techniques

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques
The meniscus root is an attachment of the anterior and posterior horns of the meniscus onto the tibia, and its primary function is to prevent extrusion under axial load. Meniscus root tear constitutes 15% to 20% of meniscus tear.
