Seyfert Galaxies And Their Environment

Symposium - International Astronomical Union, 1999
The role played by environment on nuclear activity in galaxies is not clear and largely debated (see e.g. Barnes & Hernquist 1992, Kelm 1996). To overcome statistical uncertainties, environment properties of two large samples of Seyfert galaxies (Sy 1 and Sy 2 have been kept separated) have been computed and compared with equivalent size “normal ...

Radio Galaxies and Their Environment

2002
In this paper we review the properties of radio galaxies in connection to the effect of the dynamic gaseous environment inside clusters in which they are embedded. The external gas can interact with a radio source in different ways: modifying its morphology via ram-pressure, confining the radio lobes, possibly feeding the active nucleus, enhancing star

Galaxies and Their Environments

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1995
Four questions are asked related to galaxies and their environments in the context of speculation as to which direction the field may go over the next decade. These are: What is a galaxy? Where does a galaxy end? Are galaxies open or closed? and How important are interactions?

Galaxy Environment and Clusters of Galaxies

1994
The galaxy population of clusters of galaxies is clearly different from the “field” population. While some of the static parameters, morphology for instance, are quite likely defined at formation, others, HI content, are strongly modified during the cluster lifetime due to the interaction of the objects with their environment.

Markarian galaxies and their environment

Astronomy Letters, 2011
The relationship between the characteristics of Markarian galaxies (MGs) and those of galaxy groups is studied. The list that we have compiled by a physically justified method is used as galaxy groups. The following results have been obtained. (1) The frequency of occurrence of MGs in rich groups is lower than that in poor groups and single galaxies ...

Disk galaxies and their environment

Astronomische Nachrichten, 2009
AbstractEnvironments of disk‐dominated galaxies and simple disk systems‐compared to systems with bulges‐provide a means to explore how environment relates to galaxy morphology. Our approach focuses on systems with edge‐on disks where disk‐to‐bulge ratios and disk flattening can be unambiguously determined and focuses on simple disks as evolutionary ...

Galaxies and their Environment

1982
Most galaxies are isolated systems because of their large mutual distances and the quasi-stationary character of their evolution (Section I.1). This is not always true; a high degree of clustering is evident in the space distribution of galaxies and there are volumes where close encounters are frequent, producing exchanges of energy and mass between ...

The environment of seyfert galaxies

Chinese Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1986
Abstract We made a nearest neighbour analysis on the cluster galaxies in the CfA sample. We found that galaxies with nearest distances below 20 kpc show a clear excess of Seyfert nuclei (i.e., the incidence of Seyferts among such galaxies is about 3 times higher than the average).
