A New Look at Poor Groups of Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1999
We use a new fiber spectroscopic survey of 12 nearby, poor groups of galaxies to examine the dynamics and evolution of galaxies in these common, but poorly studied, environments. Some of our conclusions are: (1) The nine groups in our sample with diffuse X-ray emission are in fact bound systems with at least 20-50 group members with absolute magnitudes

Clusters and groups of galaxies in the simulated local universe [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2006
We compare the properties of galaxy groups extracted from the Updated Zwicky Catalogue (UZC) with those of groups extracted from N-body simulations of the local Universe, in a LambdaCDM and a tauCDM cosmology. In the simulations, the initial conditions of the dark matter density field are set to reproduce the present time distribution of the galaxies ...

A New X-ray Selected Sample of Very Extended Galaxy Groups from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey

open access: yes, 2018
Some indications for tension have long been identified between cosmological constraints obtained from galaxy clusters and primary CMB measurements.

Global warming and obesity: External heat exposure as a modulator of energy balance

open access: yesFASEB BioAdvances, EarlyView.
Core body temperature regulation can significantly influence metabolic processes to maintain energy balance. For example, geographic and environmental factors (global warming) can affect obesity rates and can be tracked along latitudinal boundaries.

Details of the Spatial Structure and Kinematics of the Castor and Ursa Major Streams

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2015
A list of the Castor stream members is compiled based on the data from various authors. The membership probabilities for some stars are revised based on the individual apex, multiplicity, observational errors, and peculiarity.

Shock Enhanced [C ii] Emission from the Infalling Galaxy Arp 25

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
We present SOFIA observations with HAWC+ and FIFI-LS of the peculiar galaxy Arp 25, also known as NGC 2276 or UGC 3740, whose morphology is deformed by its impact with the intragroup medium of the NGC 2300 galaxy group.

Galaxy Cluster Environments of Radio Sources

open access: yes, 2011
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the FIRST (Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters) catalogs, we examined the optical environments around double-lobed radio sources. Previous studies have shown that multi-component radio sources

Faint dwarf galaxies in nearby clusters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Besides giant elliptical galaxies, a number of low-mass stellar systems inhabit the cores of galaxy clusters, such as dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs/dSphs), ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), and globular clusters. The detailed morphological examination of faint dwarf galaxies has, until recently, been limited to the Local Group (LG) and the two very

The faint light in groups and clusters of galaxies

open access: yesNature Astronomy, 2022
The diffuse light that spreads through groups and clusters of galaxies is made of free-floating stars not bound to any galaxy. This is known as the intracluster light (ICL) and holds important clues for understanding the evolution of these large structures.
