The Dependence of Satellite Galaxy Kinematics on Galaxy Properties

Chinese Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2018
Abstract The relations between the kinematics of satellites and the properties of hosts and satellites themselves are investigated in this paper. Our sample of hosts and satellites is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data by adopting a self-adapted method developed by van den Bosch et al.

The Kinematics and Masses of Galaxies

1995
In the 1920s, several years before the spiral nebulae were even identified as entirely separate galaxies, it was discovered that they rotated. This discovery came about as a result of the inclination of absorption lines in the spectra of the central regions of, in particular, the galaxies M81 and M104.

Kinematics of luminous blue compact galaxies

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2001
We present results from a Fabry-Perot study of the Hα velocity fields and morphologies of a sample of luminous blue compact galaxies. We estimate masses from photometry and kinematics and show that many of these BCGs are not rotationally supported. Mergers or strong interactions appear to be the triggering mechanism of the extreme starbursts seen in ...

A Kinematical and Chemical Probe of the Galaxy

1997
Most of the studies of the thick disk and halo populations suffer from biases due to selection effects. The proportions of these populations to be found in the solar neighbourhood are very small, and to obtain a significant sample of such rare stars, one has to select them by a criterion: kinematical (high proper motion) or chemical (metal poor).

Galaxy kinematics and gravitation

1990
Two galactic length-scale modifications of the Newtonian gravity law are examined in the light of observational dynamical properties of spiral galaxies: (1) the introduction of a Yukawa-type coupling for the gravitational potential, proposed by Sanders (1986); and (2) the introduction of a 1/R correction to the Newtonian gravitational force, proposed ...

Kinematic lopsidedness in spiral galaxies

1999
Morphological asymmetries between the approaching and receding sides in both the stellar and neutral hydrogen distribution are often observed in spiral galaxies. Here, attention is drawn to the presence of large-scale asymmetries in the kinematics of the neutral hydrogen gas. An example of such a kinematically lopsided galaxy is presented and discussed.
