On the dependence of galaxy morphologies on galaxy mergers [PDF]
The distribution of galaxy morphological types is a key test for models of galaxy formation and evolution, providing strong constraints on the relative contribution of different physical processes responsible for the growth of the spheroidal components.

We present the results of an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a $ $CDM cosmology. The simulation incorporates common cooling and heating processes for primordial gas. A specific halo finder has been designed and applied in order to extract a sample of galaxy clusters directly obtained from the simulation ...

The Merger Rate of Massive Galaxies [PDF]
We calculate the projected two point correlation function for samples of luminous and massive galaxies in the COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey, focusing particularly on the amplitude of the correlation function at small projected radii and exploring the constraints such measurements can place on the galaxy merger rate.

The Chandra view of galaxy mergers [PDF]
From a Chandra survey of nine interacting galaxy systems the evolution of X-ray emission during the merger process has been investigated. It is found that the X-ray luminosity peaks ~300 Myr before nuclear coalescence, and then dips, even though we know that rapid and increasing activity is still taking place at this time.

Creating lenticular galaxies with mergers [PDF]
AbstractLenticular galaxies (S0s) represent the majority of early-type galaxies in the local Universe, but their formation channels are still poorly understood. While galaxy mergers are obvious pathways to suppress star formation and increase bulge sizes, the marked parallelism between spiral and lenticular galaxies (e.g.

Mergers and galaxy assembly [PDF]
Theoretical considerations and observational data support the idea that mergers were more frequent in the past. At redshifts z = 2 to 5, violent interactions and mergers may be implicated by observations of Lyman-break galaxies, sub-mm starbursts, and active galactic nuclei.

Real galaxy mergers from galaxy pair catalogues [PDF]
ABSTRACT Mergers of galaxies are extremely violent events shaping their evolution. Such events are thought to trigger starbursts and, possibly, black hole accretion. Nonetheless, it is still not clear how to know the fate of a galaxy pair from the data available at a given time, limiting our ability to constrain the exact role of mergers.

Simulations of Galaxy Mergers [PDF]
The last few years have seen a considerable amount of effort devoted to the problem of simulating the coalescence of galaxies. After a discussion of the merits and limitations of the N-body techniques that have been used, I summarise the insight this research gives into the mechanisms driving strong interactions in galaxy collisions and into the ...
