Deep MOS Spectroscopy of NGC 1316 Globular Clusters

open access: yesGalaxies, 2017
The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 is the brightest galaxy in the Fornax cluster, and displays a number of morphological features that might be interpreted as an intermediate age merger remanent (∼3 Gyr).

Mind and Cosmos as Throughput Systems: A Convergence Through the Throughput Model

open access: yesSystems Research and Behavioral Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper advances a conceptual and mathematical foundations approach by applying the throughput model (TPM) to cosmic phenomena, reframing the universe as an extended information processing system. TPM's four stages, Perception, Information, Judgement and Decision Choice, are reformulated in explicit information‐theoretic and dynamical ...

The zCOSMOS redshift survey : Influence of luminosity, mass and environment on the galaxy merger rate

open access: yes, 2011
The contribution of major mergers to galaxy mass assembly along cosmic time is an important ingredient to the galaxy evolution scenario. We aim to measure the evolution of the merger rate for both luminosity/mass selected galaxy samples and investigate ...

Emergence and Genomic Characterization of a Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae Isolate From a New Clone in Brazil

open access: yesMicrobiology and Immunology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) has emerged globally as a major public health concern, often associated with severe community‐acquired and healthcare‐associated human infections. Despite alerts from PAHO/WHO on convergent hvKp strains with multidrug resistance in Latin America, comprehensive data from Brazil, the region's largest ...

The host galaxy of the z=2.4 radio-loud AGN MRC 0406-244 as seen by HST

open access: yes, 2013
We present multicolour Hubble Space Telescope images of the powerful z=2.4 radio galaxy MRC 0406-244 and model its complex morphology with several components including a host galaxy, a point source, and extended nebular and continuum emission. We suggest

The HST-Hyperion Survey: Companion fraction and overdensity in a z ∼ 2.5 proto-supercluster

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
We present a study of the galaxy merger and interaction activity within the Hyperion Proto-supercluster at z ∼ 2.5 in an effort to assess the occurrence of galaxy mergers and interactions in contrast to the coeval field and their impact on the buildup of

On the Progenitor of Binary Neutron Star Merger GW170817

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2017
On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB 170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations.

‘A Sort of Armed Argument’: Ireland's Civil War of Words

open access: yesHistory, EarlyView.
Abstract This article sets out to contribute to the study of the languages of European civil wars through outlining and analysing the deployment of language as a weapon by the opposing sides of the Irish independence movement that split over the terms of the Anglo‐Irish Treaty of December 1921.

An Excess of Active Galactic Nuclei Triggered by Galaxy Mergers in MaNGA Galaxies of Stellar Mass ∼1011 M ⊙

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
To facilitate new studies of galaxy-merger-driven fueling of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we present a catalog of 387 AGNs that we have identified in the final population of over 10,000 z < 0.15 galaxies observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV ...

Response of Fecal Bacteria and Fungi to Tannin‐Rich Diets in Sika Deer (Cervus nippon): Evidence from Both Feeding Experiments and Field Investigations

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Feeding with tannin‐rich diets altered the fecal microbial composition and increased the relative abundance of tannin‐degrading microbes. We hypothesize that fecal bacteria and fungi may play important roles in helping herbivores adapt to tannin‐rich diets but respond to different tannin concentrations varies.
