The simplicity of physical laws

open access: yesNoûs, EarlyView.
Abstract Physical laws are strikingly simple, yet there is no a priori reason for them to be so. I propose that nomic realists—Humeans and non‐Humeans—should recognize simplicity as a fundamental epistemic guide for discovering and evaluating candidate physical laws.

Microbial and bryospheric photosynthesis of boreal peatlands have peatland‐type‐specific responses to long‐term drying

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary The impacts of drying on bryospheric photosynthesis are poorly understood. Utilising a 20‐yr‐long experiment, we quantified the effects of long‐term water level drawdown (WLD) on links between bryospheric photosynthesis, microbial community composition, decomposition, and environmental variables.

OrchardQuant‐3D: combining drone and LiDAR to perform scalable 3D phenotyping for characterising key canopy and floral traits in fruit orchards

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
Summary Orchard fruits such as pear and apple are important for ensuring global food security and agricultural economy as they not only provide essential nutrients, but also support biodiversity and ecosystem services. Breeders, growers and plant researchers constantly study desirable tree morphological features and floral characteristics to ensure ...

Power and the History of Peace and Conflict Studies: Disremembering Gladdys Muir and the First Peace Studies Program

open access: yesPeace &Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines a silence in the histories of the formation of peace and conflict studies as an academic field, focusing on the elision of a female‐identified academic: Gladdys Esther Muir. Muir occasionally appears in histories as a datapoint in peace education chronologies where she is listed as the director of the first peace studies ...
