Characterization of the Cubamyces Menziesii Terpenome

open access: yesChemBioChem, EarlyView.
The genome of Cubamyces menziesii reveals 18 putative sesquiterpene cyclase genes. These genes are cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli, yielding 10 active enzymes. Using farnesyl diphosphate as substrate, the enzymes are analyzed, and the products characterized after bioconversion, uncovering diverse sesquiterpene structures. This study highlights

Galaxy growth in the concordance $\Lambda$CDM cosmology

open access: yes, 2007
We use galaxy and dark halo data from the public database for the Millennium Simulation to study the growth of galaxies in the De Lucia et al. (2006) model for galaxy formation.

Formation Rates of Black Hole Accretion Disk Gamma-Ray Bursts [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
While many models have been proposed for GRBs, those currently favored are all based upon the formation of and/or rapid accretion into stellar mass black holes.

Galaxy mergers on a moving mesh: a comparison with smoothed particle hydrodynamics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Galaxy mergers have been investigated for decades using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), but recent work highlighting inaccuracies inherent in the traditional SPH technique calls into question the reliability of previous studies.

Galaxy Mergers Moulding The Cgm

open access: yes, 2017
Galaxies are surrounded by sizeable gas reservoirs which host a significant amount of metals: the circum-galactic medium (CGM). The CGM acts as a mediator between the galaxy and the extra-galactic medium. However, our understanding of how galaxy mergers, a major evolutionary transformation, impact the CGM remains deficient.

FULLY COMPRESSIVE TIDES IN GALAXY MERGERS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2009
The disruptive effect of galactic tides is a textbook example of gravitational dynamics. However, depending on the shape of the potential, tides can also become fully compressive. When that is the case, they might trigger or strengthen the formation of galactic substructures (star clusters, tidal dwarf galaxies), instead of destroying them.

LGBTQ+ Affirmative Care Training in Counselor Education: A Community‐Based Inquiry

open access: yesCounselor Education and Supervision, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Counselor educators, counselors‐in‐training, and LGBTQ+ community members engaged in a community‐based qualitative inquiry exploring LGBTQ+ affirmative care education. Findings revealed counselor educators’ components and delivery of content, developmental implications for applying LGBTQ+ affirmative care, and gaps between education and LGBTQ+

The Origins of Gas Accreted by Supermassive Black Holes: The Importance of Recycled Gas

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We investigate the fueling mechanisms of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) by analyzing 10 zoom-in cosmological simulations of massive galaxies, with stellar masses 10 ^11–12 M _⊙ and SMBH masses 10 ^8.9–9.7 M _⊙ at z = 0, featuring various major and ...

Tilted Dark Halos Are Common and Long-lived, and Can Warp Galactic Disks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
In the Lambda cold dark matter paradigm, the dark halo governs the gravitational potential within which a galaxy can form and evolve. In this Letter we show that the present-day inner ( r < 50 kpc) dark halo can be significantly misaligned with the ...

Massive black hole binaries in gas-rich galaxy mergers; multiple regimes of orbital decay and interplay with gas inflows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We revisit the phases of the pairing and sinking of black holes (BHs) in galaxy mergers and circumnuclear discs in light of the results of recent simulations with massive BHs embedded in predominantly gaseous backgrounds.
