Using galaxy pairs to probe star formation during major halo mergers

open access: yes, 2015
Currently-proposed galaxy quenching mechanisms predict very different behaviours during major halo mergers, ranging from significant quenching enhancement (e.g., clump-induced gravitational heating models) to significant star formation enhancement (e.g.,

Comparing the Spatial Correlation of Binary Black Hole Mergers to Large-scale Structure through the Illustris Simulation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Gravitational waves have provided a new lens through which to view the Universe beyond traditional electromagnetic methods. The upcoming space-based gravitational wave mission, Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), will give us the first glimpse of ...

Interventions to Reduce Loneliness in Informal Caregivers of People With Dementia: A Systematic Review

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Nursing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To summarize the current evidence on reducing loneliness among informal caregivers of people with dementia, such as family members or friends. Design A systematic review. Methods The methodological quality was evaluated using the revised Cochrane risk‐of‐bias tool for randomized controlled trials and the revised JBI critical appraisal ...

McFACTS III: Compact Binary Mergers from Active Galactic Nucleus Disks over an Entire Synthetic Universe

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The active galactic nucleus (AGN) channel for the formation of binary black hole (BBH) mergers has been previously studied as a potential formation channel for the merging compact binaries observed by the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA (LVK) scientific collaboration ...

Mutual Outsourcing in a Vertically Related Market With Strategic Environmental Corporate Social Responsibility

open access: yesThe Manchester School, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study considers mutual outsourcing firms in a vertically related market and examines their strategic adoption of environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) activities. We demonstrate that ECSR adoption reduces mutual outsourcing firms' profits, resulting in a prisoner's dilemma situation, but enhances welfare regardless of ...

CONNECTIONS BETWEEN GALAXY MERGERS AND STARBURST: EVIDENCE FROM THE LOCAL UNIVERSE

open access: yes, 2014
Major mergers and interactions between gas-rich galaxies with comparable masses are thought to be the main triggers of starburst. In this work, we study, for a large stellar mass range, the interaction rate of the starburst galaxies in the local universe.

Mergers and Recoil in Triple Massive Black Hole Systems from Illustris

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) form through galaxy mergers and are among the loudest sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe. If the binary inspiral time is long, a subsequent galaxy merger can introduce a third black hole, forming a ...

The impact of cluster mergers on galaxy properties

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of Australia
Abstract The impact of galaxy cluster mergers on the properties of the resident galaxies remains poorly understood. In this paper, we investigate the effects of merging environments on star formation (SF) activity in nearby clusters (

Noble gases and nitrogen in material from asteroid Bennu

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract We report the elemental and isotopic abundances of all stable noble gases (helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon) in eight particles from asteroid Bennu returned by NASA's OSIRIS‐REx mission. We also report nitrogen abundances and isotopic ratios that were analyzed alongside neon and argon in four additional Bennu particles.

Bar Formation during a Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus-like Merger Event

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Bars are among the most prominent galactic structures, yet their formation mechanisms remain incompletely understood. They can form either internally, via dynamical instabilities, or externally, triggered by interactions with other galaxies.
