Interacting galaxies and mergers
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1993A study of the merger time-scales of various types of interacting galaxies is conducted on the basis of the collisional theory. The results indicate that in the absence of halos, violently interacting galaxies merge in a time-scale of ~ 108 years; but the mildly interacting ones have merger time-scales from ~ 109 to 1010 years. However, in the presence

Interactions and mergers of galaxies
Resonance, 2007When two galaxies approach each other, we can witness the effects of the tidal forces on a gigantic scale. Peculiar features like galactic bridges and galactic tails may form, or the two galaxies may even merge into each other and form a single system. Merger of two spiral galaxies leads to the formation of an elliptical galaxy.

Transformation of Galaxies by Mergers
2003The variation of the structural and astrophysical properties of spiral galaxies through the Hubble classification is generally interpreted in terms of an evolutionary sequence. However, the physical mechanisms that could drive this evolution are not fully understood.

In this talk, we present our recent study of galaxy mergers in a high‐resolution cosmological hydro/N‐body simulation with star formation, and compare the measured merger timescales with theoretical predictions based on the Chandrasekhar formula. In contrast to Navarro et al., our numerical results indicate, that the commonly used equation for the ...

Globular clusters and galaxy mergers
Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1982The specific cluster frequency in galaxies of type Sb is found to be an order of magnitude lower than that in ellipticals. This observation shows that typical E galaxies cannot have formed by mergers of spirals. Presently available observations suggest, but do not yet prove, that the spheroidal-bulge components of spiral galaxies have a lower specific ...
