This chapter examines the challenges and reforms in the newly acquired province of Galicia–Lodomeria after the First Partition of Poland in 1772. It contrasts the approaches of Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II to this province, with Maria Theresa favouring a cautious, respectful approach and Joseph pushing for rapid modernization.
