Canopy position and tree size structure the distribution of honeydew‐producing scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) in a temperate hardwood forest

Scale insect abundance peaked in the upper canopy of sugar maples. Parthenolecanium peaked on older internodes; Lepidosaphes on the current leader. Internodes longer than the previous carried more scales; wider ones fewer. Abstract Forest canopies are vertically stratified habitats in which microclimate and host tissue quality vary with height.

ABSTRACT Huanglongbing (HLB) is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide, and it has been disseminated by the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri, the vector of the causing agent Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. Although processed kaolin reduces psyllid infestation, long‐term field data from commercial orchards are limited.
