This review summarizes the main advances made in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and medical treatment of gallstone disease in the past year. Whether rapid weight reduction can precipitate gallstone formation is still debated. Phospholipase A(2)-II seems to play an interesting role in the pathogenesis of multiple cholesterol stone formation, and ...

Gallstones are estimated to affect over 20 million people in the United States. Recent studies have clarified the role of various dietary components in gallstone disease. Also, insulin resistance has been demonstrated to be a risk factor for gallstones.

Surgical Clinics of North America, 1982
Gallstone ileus, although uncommon, requires urgent and appropriate surgical therapy if unacceptable morbidity and mortality are to be avoided. Enterolithotomy alone remains the mainstay of operative treatment for gallstone ileus, but the additional performance of a one-stage cholecystectomy and repair of fistula if desirable if the condition of the ...

Gallstone pancreatitis is a disease of high mortality (11%) and significant morbidity (42%). An analysis of 66 patients with this disease revealed the importance of an early aetiological diagnosis; 66% of our patients had evidence of previous biliary disease. Most patients were elderly and the severity of their disease could be predicted using Ranson's

Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, 2005
The significance and natural history of fetal cholelithiasis is not yet well defined. We report two cases of echogenic foci detected prenatally by ultrasound. The gallstones resolved in both cases by 16 weeks following birth. Both infants were treated by ursodeoxycholic acid.

Cholesterol cholelithiasis is common in Western populations and represents a consequence of altered cholesterol homeostasis. Gallstones form because of a complex and incompletely understood series of metabolic and physicochemical events that promote cholesterol crystallization in bile.

Gallstone pancreatitis is caused by transient obstruction of the ampulla of Vater by a migrating gallstone. Intraglandular activation of pancreatic enzymes occurs (by an unclear mechanism), and their entry into the circulation causes most of the local and systemic events of pancreatitis.
