The role of an amateur astronomer has changed. When I started out, in 1930 (!), an amateur was concerned mainly with the Solar System, and usually with one particular object, in my case the Moon. There were some amateurs who were variable star enthusiasts, but not many and amateur photography was rudimentary.

Radio Emission from Supernovae and Gamma-Ray Bursters
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 2002▪ Abstract Study of radio supernovae over the past 20 years includes two dozen detected objects and more than 100 upper limits. From this work it is possible to identify classes of radio properties, demonstrate conformance to and deviations from existing models, estimate the density and structure of the circumstellar material and, by inference, the ...

Ruler: An instrument to measure gamma-ray burster distances
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1994We describe a satellite‐borne soft x‐ray burst detector specifically designed to determine the GRB distance scale. This is achieved experimentally by measuring the soft x‐ray extinction by interstellar absorption of a representative sample of bursts.

Search for optical flashes from gamma-ray bursters
Advances in Space Research, 1986Preliminary results of an investigation of the Ondrejov and Sonneberg plate collections for possible optical counterparts to gamma ray bursters (GRBs) are presented. The study proceeds in three directions: as time-correlated searches for GRBs with known positions, as time-correlated searches for GRBs without known positions, and as archival searches ...

Searches for low-energy counterparts of gamma-ray bursters
Advances in Space Research, 1986The results of six studies concerning the identification of low-energy counterparts of gamma-ray bursters (GRBs) are reported. From these results, it is concluded that the near-infrared observations of GRBs from IRAS pose serious difficulties for several GRB models.

Search for periodically-repeating gamma-ray bursters from BATSE
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1994We investigate 260 triggered cosmic gamma‐ray bursts, detected by the BATSE detector on the Compton Gamma Observatory from April 21, 1991 until March 5, 1992 (320 days), with the Fourier Power Spectrum method to search for possible periodically‐repeating gamma‐ray bursters. September 25, 1991 gamma‐ray burst, GRB910925 (trigger no.

Cataclysmic-Variable Observers and Gamma Ray Burster Hunters
2004Observing variable stars is something that is fascinating in itself, but has the bonus that the results are of great interest to professional astronomers. This is real science.
