Varied motivations for secondary forest reclearing among landholders make forest persistence challenging

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1943-1956, June 2026.
Abstract Remote sensing studies show that ephemeral forest regeneration is widespread in the tropics, limiting the climate and biodiversity benefits from net increases in forest cover. Socioeconomic, biophysical and landscape variables can help explain the spatial distribution of reforestation reversals.

Antes

Sustainable Livestock Decisions in a Post‐Conflict Frontier: Evidence From Colombia's Orinoquía

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, Volume 77, Issue 2, Page 304-319, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The Orinoquía region is one of Colombia's principal agricultural frontiers and has been shaped by long‐standing armed‐conflict dynamics that continue to influence land governance, producer incentives, and investment decisions. Efforts to promote sustainable cattle production emphasize two key practices: sustainable pasture management ...

Calibration of the species threat abatement and restoration metric's threat abatement component in a Costa Rican landscape

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract Achieving global conservation policy goals requires the ability to set and measure progress toward science‐based targets for biodiversity. The species threat abatement and restoration (STAR) metric was developed to enable actors to set science‐based targets for species.

Mexican Freshwater Fish: Identifying Conservation Priorities and High‐Risk Areas for Fisheries Under Climate Change

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater fish are essential components of aquatic ecosystems, providing key ecological functions and supporting livelihoods. Climate change poses a significant threat to freshwater biodiversity; consequently, both its conservation and the food security it sustains may be at risk.

Telomere Length Is Determined by Intrinsic Factors and Is Shortened During Drought Years in Gallotia galloti

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Telomere dynamics in ectotherms remain poorly understood relative to endotherms, yet are increasingly relevant in the context of climate change. Here, we used model‐averaged GLMMs and hierarchical partitioning to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic drivers of relative telomere length in the Western‐Canaries Lizard (Gallotia galloti) across a 10‐year ...

Short‐term effects of wildlife rehabilitation disappear over time in the wild: A case study on Spanish imperial eagles

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 5, May 2026.
We assessed the effectiveness of Wildlife Recovery Centers by comparing dispersal behavior of rehabilitated and wild Spanish imperial eagles using GPS tracking. Rehabilitated individuals initially moved shorter distances, rested more, and hunted less than wild controls, but these differences declined over time and ultimately disappeared.
