Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL)

2014
The GDL is important part of polymer electrolyte membrane PEM and direct methanol DM fuel cell. There are two gas diffusion layers (cathode and anode sides) which as the name suggests diffuse reactant gases to the catalyst layer (of the electrolyte membrane).

The Effect of Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) Porosity Variation on Oxygen Distribution Along the PEM Fuel Cell

2020
In this paper, a PEM fuel cell with straight single-channel was simulated using the ANSYS Fuel Cell Module. The cell used in this work consists of anode and cathode, gas channels, gas diffusion layers, catalyst layers and membrane. The pressure of hydrogen inlet is set at 1 bar gauge and the hydrogen mass fraction is set at 0.455.

Effects of basic gas diffusion layer components on PEMFC performance with capillary pressure gradient

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2021
The gas diffusion layer (GDL) is composed of a substrate and a micro-porous layer (MPL), and is treated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) to promote water discharge. Additionally, the MPL mainly consists of carbon black and PTFE.

A three-dimensional analysis of the effect of anisotropic gas diffusion layer(GDL) thermal conductivity on the heat transfer and two-phase behavior in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC)

Journal of Power Sources, 2010
A three-dimensional and two-phase model was employed to investigate the effect of the anisotropic GDL thermal conductivity on the heat transfer and liquid water removal in the PEMFCs with serpentine flow field and semi-counter flow operation. The GDL with different anisotropic thermal conductivity in the three directions (x, y, z) was simulated for ...

Effect of prominent gas diffusion layer (GDL) on non-isothermal transport characteristics and cell performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC)

Energy, 2015
Abstract This paper investigated the effect of prominent gas diffusion layer (GDL) on non-isothermal transport characteristics and cell performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) by the finite-volume SIMPLE-C method coupled with preconditioned conjugate gradient methods. The geometric parameters of prominent GDL are involved in the

Effect of the porosity distribution on the liquid water transport in the gas diffusion layer of PEMFC

Electrochimica Acta, 2021
Water management significantly influences the life and power output of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The gas diffusion layer (GDL) provides key transport paths of reactant gas and liquid water in the PEMFC. This study uses the volume of

Gas diffusion layer degradation in proton exchange membrane fuel cells: Mechanisms, characterization techniques and modelling approaches

Journal of Power Sources, 2021
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been considered as a promising power source for electric vehicles. However, the widespread use of PEMFCs requires a significant improvement in durability. As a key component of PEMFCs, gas diffusion layer
