A New Method for Measuring the Diffusion Coefficient in a Gas Phase

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2006
A new and fast method for measuring the diffusion coefficients of binary gas mixtures using ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has been developed. In this method, the sample is injected as a short pulse into the flowing drift gas, forming a Gaussian concentration profile inside the drift region.

Comparing through-plane diffusibility correlations in PEFC gas diffusion layers using the lattice Boltzmann method

International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2017
Abstract One of the key elements in a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) is the gas diffusion layer (GDL). The GDL offers mechanical support to the cell and provides the medium for diffusing the reactant gases from the flow plates to the electrolyte enabling the electrochemical reactions, and therefore the energy conversion.

Two‐Chamber, Two‐Gas and One‐Chamber, One‐Gas Methods for Measuring the Soil‐Gas Diffusion Coefficient: Validation and Inter‐calibration

Soil Science Society of America Journal, 2013
We constructed a new two‐chamber device for gas diffusion measurements in the laboratory, where the diffusion process is followed by two counter‐diffusing gases. One of the two chambers of the new apparatus is flushed with Ar, and the diffusion process is started by removing a metal slide separating the chamber from the soil sample.

Preparation of a Gas Diffusion Electrode by Ozone Gas Pretreatment and an Ion-exchange Method

Ozone: Science & Engineering, 2003
Surface oxidation using ozone gas, produced by an electrolytic ozone generator, was applied for preparation of a gas-diffusion electrode (GDE) for an electrochemical energy conversion system. An uncatalyzed carbon sheet containing poly(tetrafluoroethylene) binder was first placed into contact with ozone gas to form active functional groups on the ...

Improved experimental method for measuring gas diffusivity through thin porous media

AIChE Journal, 2012
Gas diffusion through porous media is critical for the high current density operation of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, where the electrochemical reaction becomes rate limited by the diffusive flux of reactants. Precise knowledge of the diffusivity through various components in a fuel cell is necessary for accurate modeling and analysis ...

Method of assessing diffusion coefficients from gas absorption by metal powders

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 1982
A simple experimental method is proposed for determining diffusion coefficients from amounts of gas absorbed by metal powders. An analysis is made of errors in the measurement of D by the new method, and optimum experimental conditions are indicated. Data yielded by a study of the diffusion of hydrogen in LaCo5 show that DH293 → LaCo5 can be calculated

Dynamic simulation method of toxic gas diffusion in complex geographic environment

2015 Fourth International Conference on Agro-Geoinformatics (Agro-geoinformatics), 2015
The traditional simulations of the toxic gas diffusion are suitable for the ideal and stable environment, but the factors in the complex geographic environment are not considered comprehensively. In this paper, simulation method for the gas diffusion considering the complex geographic environment, which includes wind field, terrain surface, dry ...

A method to produce a gas diffusion layer and a fuel cell comprising a gas diffusion layer

2015
The present invention discloses a method of manufacturing gas diffusion layers (GDL) with a defined pattern of hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. The method to produce electrically conductive porous materials with distributed wettability comprises the steps of: a) Coating the external and internal surfaces of a porous base material made of carbon ...

Accumulation chamber method and landfill gas diffuse emissions monitoring

2008
A measurement method has been developed and applied in order to measure and help to minimize the impacts of landfills on the atmosphere and to reduce greenhouse gases emissions. The studied method is the accumulation chamber, which resulted suitable for the quantification of non collected emissions of landfill gas (LFG). The measure campaigns have been

Ex Situ Characterization Method for Flooding in Gas Diffusion Layers and Membrane Electrode Assemblies With a Hydrophilic Gas Diffusion Layer

Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology, 2015
Proper water management is required for the operation of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), in order to maintain the critical balance between adequate membrane hydration and prevention of water flooding in the catalyst layer. In PEFCs, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is sandwiched between two gas diffusion layers (GDLs).
