Particle-Substrate Interactions in Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2003
Abstract Aluminium powder of 99.7wt% purity and in the nominal particle size range –75+15µm has been sprayed onto a range of substrates by cold gas dynamic spraying (cold spraying). The substrates examined include metals with a range of hardness, polymers and ceramics.

Localisation of deformation in cold gas dynamic spraying

Surface Engineering, 2016
One of the main specific features of the cold spray process is localisation during particle impact deformation. The resultant adiabatic shear instability is the phenomenon that is known to play a major role in the particle/substrate and particle/particle bonding and coating structure formation during the cold spray process.

Analysis of cold gas dynamically sprayed aluminium deposits

Materials Letters, 2004
Abstract Cold spray is a high rate, direct material deposition process that utilises the kinetic energy of particles sprayed at velocities in excess of 700 m s −1 to effect bonding through plastic deformation on impact. This paper describes the preliminary analysis of aluminium coatings deposited by this route.

CoNiCrAlY microstructural changes induced during Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2008
The present study is part of an ongoing research project that aims to develop high performance bond coats by means of Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying (CGDS) for the manufacturing of thermal barrier coatings (TBC). The objective of this work is to investigate the microstructure of a CGDS coating and compare it to that of the original feedstock powder in order

Numerical Simulation of the Cold Gas Dynamic Spray Process

Journal of Thermal Spray Technology, 2006
Abstract A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model of the cold gas dynamic spray process is presented. The gas dynamic flow field and particle trajectories within an oval shaped supersonic nozzle as well as in the immediate surroundings of the nozzle exit, before and after the impact with the target plane, are simulated. Predicted nozzle

A Review of the Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying Process

2021
In this modern era, use of coatings on engineering materials has become highly inevitable. One such emerging coating method is the cold gas dynamic spraying. It is a solid-state process where deposition on to the surface of the material is done at high pressure and velocity. Adhesion of the powder to the substrate is possible because of the high amount

Pulsed-Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying Process: Development and Capabilities

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2007
Abstract A new process, the Pulsed-Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying process is presented in this work. A description of the process and of the experimental set-up developed at the University of Ottawa Cold Spray Laboratory is presented. It is envisioned that this process could allow for the feedstock particles to be accelerated to high impact ...

Deposition Mechanisms of Cold Gas Dynamic Sprayed MCrAIY Coatings

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2007
Abstract Thermal-sprayed (i.e. LPPS or HVOF) MCrAlY coatings are widely used for land-based gas turbine applications against high-temperature oxidation and hot corrosion. However, due to requirement for further improvement of turbine efficiency, dense and stable coatings are necessary. The cold spray (also referred to as cold gas dynamic

Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying of Iron-Base Amorphous Alloy

Journal of Thermal Spray Technology, 2006
This paper describes recent efforts to synthesize iron-base amorphous alloys coatings using cold gas dynamic spraying. Characterization of the gas-atomized iron-base (Fe-Cr-Mo-W-C-Mn-Si-Zr-B) powder shows that the powder is fully amorphous when the particle diameter is below 20 µm.

Production of Titanium Deposits by Cold Gas Dynamic Spray

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2005
Abstract Over the past five years, interest in cold gas dynamic spraying (CGDS) has increased substantially. Considerable effort has been devoted to process development and optimization for low melting point metals such as copper and aluminium. This paper will describe work undertaken to expand the understanding of deposition of titanium
