Thermal analysis and optimization of bionic cooling channels of gas foil thrust bearings
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2023Under high-temperature conditions, heat evacuation of foil bearing has a significant impact on bearing performance, including loading performance and reliability. During bearing operation, viscous dissipative heat in the lubricant gas film is the main source of heat generation. For foil bearings, enhancing the heat evacuation efficiency is essential to

Performance characteristics of gas-lubricated bump-type foil thrust bearing
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2014In the present study, the static and dynamic characteristics of Generation II bump-type foil thrust bearings are investigated. For the static characteristics, a 2D compressible Reynolds equation containing effects of centrifugal forces is derived to model the fluid flow in the thin gas film.

Development of a Fluid-Structure Model for Gas-Lubricated Bump-Type Foil Thrust Bearings
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2016In the present study, a computational model for the coupled fluid-structure simulation of bump-type foil thrust bearings is developed. A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver is extended to model the fluid flow within the thin gap. In addition, a new solver is developed to model the bump and top foils within the foil thrust bearings ...

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2015
This study aims to tailor the bearing stiffness for enhancing the load-carrying capacity of foil thrust bearings. New architectures for the bump foil are introduced with structural stiffness tailored in the radial and circumferential directions to ensure a converging gas film under high axial loads while maintaining a reasonable bearing compliance to ...

Prediction of Gas Thrust Foil Bearing Performance for Oil-Free Automotive Turbochargers
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2014Green technologies are a mandate in a world concerned with saving resources and protecting the environment. Oil-free turbocharger (TC) systems for passenger and commercial vehicles dispense with the lubricant in the internal combustion engine (ICE), hence eliminating not just oil coking, but also suppressing nonlinear behavior, instability and ...

Real-Gas Effects in Foil Thrust Bearings Operating in the Turbulent Regime
Journal of Tribology, 2013In this study, an elastohydrodynamic model was created for predicting the pressure field in a compliant thrust bearing assembly lubricated by high pressure CO2. This application is of significance due to ongoing research into the closed-cycle supercritical CO2 turbine as a high-efficiency alternative to steam turbines.
