Performance potential of gas foil thrust bearings enhanced with spiral grooves [PDF]

open access: yesTribology International, 2019
Abstract The upscaling of turbomachinery using gas foil thrust bearings is limited because of their limited load capacity and the thermal issues linked with very thin film thickness. The improvement potential of spiral grooves manufactured on the top-foil of such bearings is investigated in terms of load capacity and drag torque for a wide range of ...

Design, Fabrication, and Performance of Foil Gas Thrust Bearings for Microturbomachinery Applications [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 1: Aircraft Engine; Ceramics; Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels; Manufacturing, Materials and Metallurgy; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery, 2008
A methodology for the design and construction of simple foil thrust bearings intended for parametric performance testing and low marginal costs is presented. Features drawn from a review of the open literature are discussed as they relate to bearing performance. The design of fixtures and tooling required to fabricate foil thrust bearings is presented,

EFFECT OF MISALIGNMENT ON THE DURABILITY OF GAS-LUBRICATED FOIL THRUST BEARING [PDF]

open access: yesJES. Journal of Engineering Sciences, 2016
The present study aims to evaluate the effects of static and dynamic angular misalignments of the runner surface on the performance of a gas-lubricated foil thrust bearing. The responses of the bearing load capacity, viscous power loss, and the stiffness and damping coefficients of the gas film to small angular misalignments are thoroughly analyzed ...

Numerical analysis of aerodynamic lubricated double-decked protuberant foil thrust bearing

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Mechanical Design, Systems, and Manufacturing, 2019
Double-decked protuberant foil bearing is a type of foil bearing that uses two stacking-up layers of protuberant foils as supporting structure. In preliminary experiments, wear failure of foil thrust bearing occurs occasionally due to excessive axial ...

Preliminary Studies on Gas Foil Thrust Bearings with Stepped Foils

open access: yesTribology Online
Studies on non-contact hydrodynamic foil thrust bearings (FTB) with a diameter of 224 mm were fabricated and tested for operating speeds up to 20,000 rpm. Single layer top foils and stepped / multiple foils with steel and copper foil materials were used in the present study that eliminates the complexity of foil design and manufacturing.
