Gasterophilus pecorum in the soft palate of a British pony
Veterinary Record, 2005TWO species of Gasterophilus (‘horse bots’) are commonly found in abattoir surveys of horses in the UK ([Edwards 1982][1], [Coles and Pearson 2000][2], [Lyon and others 2000][3]). Gasterophilus intestinalis has a wide geographical distribution, whereas Gasterophilus nasalis appears to ...

Gasterophilus pecorum (Diptera: Gasterophilidae) is the most damaging parasites in Przewalaski’s horses that were re-wilded in Kalamaili, Xinjiang, China. In this study, 18 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated for the first time from G. pecorum. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 19 and the mean number of alleles was 10.78.

Equids are host for species of Gasterophilus and Habronema, larvae presence of these parasites may lead to stomatitis and gastritis. During necropsy with special refer to stomach of one 4-year-old male Persian onager, parasites were collected from stomach and transferred to 70 % alcohol.

The genetic diversity of Gasterophilus pecorum populations consisting of 192 individuals sampled from Przewalski's horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) in Xinjiang Province, China, was evaluated using 12 microsatellite loci. The genetic variability within populations and genetic differentiation among populations were estimated.
