Gastric emptying and bezoars

The American Journal of Surgery, 1989
Bezoars are conglomerates of undigested material in the stomach, which appear as a late complication of gastric surgery and are presumably related to secondary motility changes. We studied the gastric emptying of a technetium-99m-(Tc 99m) labelled solid meal in 10 patients who presented with a bezoar 1 to 20 years after vagotomy and pyloroplasty ...

Gastric bezoars

The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1978
Gastric bezoar formation is an uncommon sequela of gastroduodenal surgery or unusual eating habits. Because they generally produce severe symptoms, their removal is always necessary. Previously, this required surgical extirpation or slow enzymatic dissolution.

Gastric bezoar (phytobezoar)

Postgraduate Medical Journal, 2019
A 76-year-old man was referred to the author’s department with melena and anaemia (haemoglobin level 102 g/L). The patient had a medical history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) showed a gastric bezoar of 5 cm diameter in the fornix (figure 1A) with ulceration of the angulus.

Management of gastric persimmon bezoars

The American Journal of Surgery, 1967
Abstract Thirteen cases of gastric persimmon bezoars are reviewed. The possible dangers of not resecting associated ulcers during gastrotomy and the high morbidity and mortality after partial gastrectomy are discussed. The recommended mode of treatment is a large gastrotomy, removal of the bezoars, small bowel exploration, and wedge resection of ...

Laparoscopic Removal of Gastric Bezoar

Surgical Laparoscopy, Endoscopy & Percutaneous Techniques, 2007
Many approaches have been proposed for the treatment of bezoars, such as gastroscopic fragmentation, nasogastric lavage or suction, and enzymatic therapy. Because gastroscopic removal has not always been successful, especially in large gastric bezoars, surgical removal by gastrotomy through abdominal incision has been performed.

Delayed gastric emptying associated with gastric bezoar

Seminars in Nuclear Medicine, 1988

The patient also gave a history of poor apetite and lost 16 pounds of body weight over a year.

[Gastric bezoars].

Klinicheskaia meditsina, 1981
Gastric bezoars are concretions sometimes mistaken for cancer, because of their polymorphous symptoms. Previous gastric surgery modifies anatomy and functions of the stomach and favours the bezoar deposition. Digestive endoscopy allows a correct diagnosis and therapy. A wide review of the literature is given.

[Gastric bezoar].

Cirugia pediatrica : organo oficial de la Sociedad Espanola de Cirugia Pediatrica, 2001
Bezoar consist of the accumulation of different substances in the digestive tract. We present the clinical case of a girl with gastric trichobezoar discovered in a postoperatory follow-up to an appendicectomy. Ultra-sound images and oesophagus-gastric transit are fundamental points in the diagnosis.

Gastric bezoars after gastrectomy

The American Journal of Surgery, 1973
Summary Two cases of food bezoars that occurred after gastrectomy are presented. In cases of food bezoars gastrotomy is not required. A low residue diet and medical treatment (such as hydrochloric acid syrup) are recommended. The occurrence of this complication should be more widely recognized, because the number of reported cases of phytobezoars in ...
