Protective Roles of Prebiotics and Probiotics Against Environmental Pollutant‐Induced Toxicities: A Systematic Review of Animal Studies

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
Pollutant‐induced epithelial damage also leads to a cascade of harmful effects, including reduced mucus secretion, decreased luminal pH, and enhanced absorption of toxins. These changes contribute to oxidative stress (↑ malondialdehyde (MDA); ↓ superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and heightened ...

Blueberries Reduce Palm Oil‐Induced Metabolic Endotoxemia in an In Vitro Human Intestinal‐Immune Cell Model

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
Digested palm oil and LPS treatment on intestinal Caco‐2 cells results in palm oil‐induced LPS translocation across the intestinal cell monolayer and nuclear factor kappa B (NF‐κB) activation of basolateral macrophages. Interestingly, digested whole berries reduce the palm oil + LPS‐mediated NF‐κB activation in macrophages.

Vitamin D3 Emulsions Stabilized With Pea Proteins and Arabinoxylans as a Fortification Strategy for Plant‐Based Beverages

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, EarlyView.
This study evaluated pea proteins (PPI) and corn arabinoxylans (CAX) as emulsifiers for vitamin D3‐enriched plant‐based drinks in comparison to polysorbates. Incorporation into oat milk improved emulsion stability but reduced digestion rate. Despite this, final lipid digestion and vitamin D3 bioaccessibility remained unaffected, highlighting the ...

Physiological barriers to oral intake in survivors of critical illness: A scoping review

open access: yesNutrition in Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Oral nutrition is the predominant mode of nutrition delivery on the post–Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward; yet, it is associated with lower intake than via enteral or parenteral nutrition. There are limited data on barriers that influence oral intake in ICU survivors.
